About Coconut Lagoon
Ultimately as intriguing as its name, Coconut Lagoon offers something different to Clifton. Of course there is no shortage of Indian restaurants in York. There is, however, no other restaurant specialising entirely in South Indian food, with the vast majority of other eateries focused on northern traditions. But this popular and well respected spot on Clarence Street doesn’t rely on novelty alone, they deliver on supreme quality and amazing taste. The staff are friendly, the atmosphere welcoming, and the chefs showcase a clear wealth of experience and passion through myriad delicious dishes that will leave you promising to return for another South Indian sojourn. Coconut Lagoon is used to catering for functions and large groups so it’s a great choice for an event, though even for a solo lunch or romantic dinner for two you’ll be more than looked after with mountains of their famous fresh dosa, moreish uzhunnu vada (a traditional lentil doughnut) and long list of rich curries.

Brilliant restaurant and food. Atmosphere great. Busy but worth the wait. Staff more than willing to advise about choices and portions. Will definitely go again. Thank you
We had read other good reviews for this restaurant and they were spot-on. Lovely meal, good service, great value. The lamb dish we had was amazing!
Friendly staff and excellent South Indian food. Very good for anyone on a gluten free diet. Any menu item with wheat flour is clearly described. Delicious rice bread. Quite different from the run-of-the -mill Indian food that can be eaten almost everywhere.
Good food, excellent service and value for money.wil love to call again.waiter was attentive I would liket to call again .south India food I love.Idley and Dosha.
We had a great birthday dinner at the Coconut Lagoon and really enjoyed the lovely food and the good service! Apparently something had gone wrong with the reservation, as they had only received a reservation for 6 people, and not for 12 - but the staff was very accommodating, solved the issue quickly and put a few tables together so that we could all sit at the same table!
The food itself was amongst the best curries I've ever tasted. The variety of tastes, textures and flavours was superb and it was all perfectly cooked. My wife said the fish dish one of the best meals (not just curried) of her life so far. The service was great at the start but flaky at the end. However, the waiter recommended a wine without us asking, and it was in my view poor and disappointing, if you're going to recommend a wine it should at least be above average, this one fell well short of that. I'd have no hesitation in returning for the food itself, it was remarkable, but I'd not bother with the wine list.
After reading rave reviews online we decided to give Coconut Lagoon a try and were not disappointed. I really enjoy south Indian cuisine and the Dosa's here were fantastic the only minor critcism was the slightly slow (but pleasant) service and incorrect bill (remedied after putting it out.
This was our third visit to Coconut Lagoon and won't be our last. The food is wonderful, very different to the standard "Indian" restaurant. The service could improve as we weren't offered desert, extra drinks or tea/coffee after the meal.
Delicious, unusual flavours and tastes - different from most other curry houses. Particularly enjoyable was the Chicken Kadai Curry, and the refreshing Cardamon Beer - really tasty. Friendly service on a busy Saturday night. Thank you Coconut Lagoon team.
Absolutely fantastic meal. The chef was so helpful and offered to make all the dishes separately due to my partner not being able to have onions. We had the thali which is about 8 small Indian dishes with rice, chapati and poppadom. You also got ice cream for desert included in the price. Will definitely be returning.
Friendly atmosphere, fairly simple decor but i like the fact the effort's going into the delicious curries and dosais. Spices beautifully fresh and used in wonderful combinations, very generous portions of everything. Staff friendly. We chose it due to good reviews on tripadvisor and were rewarded! Plus kingfisher lager on tap at a good price...
Food as great as ever but the place was freezing. When we came in the radiator was called and even though they said it had been turned on stayed called. People were eating with their coats on. If the heating was broken down - the radiator at the back seemed to be working but not in the front - they should not have opened up that evening. We struggled to enjoy ourselves with cold feet and cold hands
We really enjoyed our evening at the Coconut Lagoon! The food was excellent and the staff was very friendly! We will definitely go there again.
We dined when in York for Ebore races. Restaurant was quite busy but staff were attentive. Menu was quite short but long enough. Starters were very good. Main courses were slightly different from normal. One was nice the other not so (heavy taste of aniseed which was listed in the ingredients but heavier than I thought). In saying that it was still a nice meal so no reason to suggest it isn't worth a visit.
Went here when in York for Christmas shopping. It is in a bit of an odd location with a bus stop just outside, and a bit of a garish sign. But once inside and eating it was fab. Brilliant food, great service, this place is a hidden gem!
Nice environment, great service and REALLY tasty food - quite different flavours from previous indian meals we have had. The portions were very generous so, next time we go, I think we might try three courses - but share them between us. Looking forward to going again.
The restaurant was recommended to me by a friend I trusted, and my trust was vindicated. The dining area was well laid out and we didn't feel crowded even though it was busy. The food was excellent and freshly cooked, and the staff courteous and friendly.
Fantastic authentic vegetarian thali. Attentive and helpful staff. Will definitely eat there again and recommend to friends. They happily packaged up all we didn't eat so we could enjoy the remainder at home. The cardamom beer was delicious too.
Really tasty food. Great service. The owner who is also the chef takes a lot of pride in his food. Nice touch that he came and spoke to us about our meals and the way they are cooked.
delicious food and friendly service. It is nice to find an Indian restaurant that is a bit different to your usual. We would definately recommend this place - we have been many many times :)
We've visited here a few times and the food is always excellent. Some of the dishes I've not seen in other Indian restaurants before, so if we have friends visiting York bring them here.
Excellent food and hospitality as always. Great service. Relaxed atmosphere and perfect for a small group or more intimate meal for two. The accompanying breads and rice we had were also wonderful. Thank you
Excellent food, friendly helpful staff, would recommend, different to a standard Indian restaurant, much more flavour and unusual choices, cardamom beer was fantastic too and went well with the food.we will definitely bs back
Beautiful food, very reasonable prices- especially for York. Would definitely recommend. Whilst we were there some old regulars were visiting so it is obviously a place people return to time and time again :)
An absolute gem. Food probably the best Indian we have ever tasted. Presented beautifully. Staff lovely. Met the chef. Whether in York or the vicinity, well worth a visit. Don't miss it.
Stunning food. Chef made appearance at table to offer free taster dish. Gorgeous. Will most definitely visit again when next in York. Would recommend to anyone who loves this type of cuisine.
the service was excellent and even for vegetarians there was plenty of choice. would go there again and recommend it to friends. we had starters and mains and they sufficient size.
Delicious! Never had food from this region of India before and it was really different and the flavours were superb! Plus a cardamom beer to wash it down. Recommend!
The food here is different and excellent. The staff are amazing- we would definitely recommend and wish it was local to us! Go along, you won't be disappointed
Fantastic, very tasty unusual food. Very friendly staff. Heading slightly out of town but still easy walking distance and large car park opposite. Will definitely be going back.
Excellent food and excellent service! A relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Our compliments to the chef! Such delicious food. Thank you very much for the great evening!!
Attentive service and excellent food. Something a bit different compared with the familiar Bangladeshi and Punjabi restaurants. Will definitely go again either to eat in or takeaway.
Great food. Friendly and obliging staff. Lots of choices . Plus some dishes I have not seen before. Reasonable prices. Easy to access location . It's great
A lovely restaurant, attentive staff and very tasty food. This is our third visit and we will certainly be back. Many thanks for a lovely evening.
Food was amazing , great to try different types of indian food which I had never tried before . Recommending the indian pancakes and veggie dishes
Quite simply the best curry I have ever eaten. Chef took so much care to ensure the whole family ate a curry that suited their taste
Food very good and friendly service. Staff were extremely helpful explaining the dishes and helping us to make our choices of starters and main courses.
Very nice food, good spices and flavours in every dish. Slightly slow service but the staff were really friendly. Great seafood dishes too, very different from your average curry house.
Great selection of food. Can recommend the Thali which is a selection of lots of little dishes ideal if you're not sure what to order
Amazing and fantastic food as always with a lovely relaxed atmosphere and friendly, welcoming staff. The best Indian food in York by a long way!!
Fantastic food! Wonderful Masala Dosa... a must-have if you go. Welcoming and lovely, very helpful staff. We will be going again... and again.. and again!
Food generally good. Service quite abysmally slow - maitre d tried to make up by offered free drinks but some v bad delays - particularly when serving starters. Took over an hour to appear and then all served separately so last starter came 20 minutes after others.
Authentic and delicious South Indian food. Several dishes are highly recommended: meen pollichathu (spicy fish on banana leaf), poori and dosas. Do also try the cardamom beer!
Amazing South Indian /Keralan food! Would definitely plan to return the next time we're in York. Fish pollichatu was the highlight. Thanks for a lovely meal.
Great food, good service, reasonable price. Overall excellent value for money and we would visit again when we are in York and highly recommend to try
The food was lovely and there was lots of it! There were lots of great vegetarian options to try. Overall really good value for money.
Fantastic food but the service a little slow. They had interesting flavor combinations and the Pink Elephant wine was excellent. Good value for money overall.
We had been here before over 12 months ago. What a difference a year makes. The service this time was poor with things not arriving not just for us but other guests too. The food is different to most Indian restaurants but did not tick many boxes.
Quite a different menu from usual, or maybe Scottish Indian restaurants. Food was okay, but service poor, can't really say it was a particularly wonderful experience.
