Go inside this award-winning restaurant, though, and you’ll see the journey is not into a Newcastle of days gone by but rather to the lavish world of the Indian Maharajas. Colourful decoration, plush furniture and warm lighting evoke excess and indulgence – but the food at Jashn doesn’t leave you with excess cholesterol and a heavy belly. Joshn minimises use of butter, oil, colourings and salt to provide healthy food that does not compromise taste. Pick your way through an elaborate menu of starters (we recommend tamarind samosas and Rawalpindi curry puffs) and meaty or vegetarian mains (the lean duck piyaza curry, with hints of honey and apricot in its creamy sauce, is a particular specialty), or leave it up to the experts and choose Jashn’s Khazana platter (for 4) or all-inclusive Maharaja menu.
