Suffused with history, Ma Egerton’s Stage Door (simply Ma Egerton’s to regulars) is one of the city centre’s most venerable pubs. Established in 1869, Ma Egerton’s is named after landlady, theatrical agent, and local character Mary Egerton, whose roll-call of loyal pubgoers includes the likes of Frank Sinatra, Harry Houdini, Tom Jones, Laurel & Hardy and Charlie Chaplin. Join this fascinating walk of fame by heading up to central Liverpool’s Pudsey Street, tucked behind the Empire Theatre just off London Road and Lord Nelson Street, and sink a pint of ale, sip a glass of wine, and enjoy some fantastic food like Ma’s Showtime cheeseboard or a pizza from the Old Fashioned Pizza Shop, with generously topped discs named after the various celebrities that have trod the boards at this famous haunt.
Glad I booked a table as it was very busy. Staff showed us to our reserved table. Great food and good value, ideal place to go before theatre or for any night out.
First visit to Ma Egertons even though I have known it was there for years. Wanted somewhere close to Liverpool Empire theatre so decided to give it a try and so glad I did. Staff very friendly as opener. Had reserved a table for 3 which was in a corner out of the way which was perfect. We all had pizzas which are all named after actors, very quirky, all absolutely fabulous, lovely thin crust plenty of toppings and served on wooden boards. The place is full of old photos of stars and Liverpool. All together a lovely experience and will definitely return. Prices were reasonable too. Would highly recommend. If you are going to the theatre I would recommend booking a table as it does get very busy.
Amazing night. Fantastic atmosphere. Busy lively community spirited pub. Ukulele band were fantastic. Food and beer were spot on. Couldn't ask for anymore. Staff were very friendly.
Three friends and I visited Ma Egerton's for a meal prior to a theatre visit. My friend's had never been to Ma's before. They can't wait to revisit Liverpool and eat at Ma's again. They had Scouse, another first for them, a wholesale, delicious and wipe the dish clean meal. I had a Laurel and Hardy pizza which as always was wonderful. All meals, great value for money. The ambience of the pub was amazing and the staff were competent, courteous and professional.
One of the best pizzas I've ever had in Liverpool - far outstrips all the pizza chains and much more reasonably priced. Really lovely little local pub right next to the station. Drinks are fantastic, staff always really friendly. I came for the Monday night quiz which was an absolute hoot - 6 rounds of 5 questions, ideal length (beware though, it never starts or finishes on time so you'll have to be prepared to make a whole night of it). The whole pub got involved in the singing rounds and it was a fantastic atmosphere - would highly recommend.
As soon as we walked through the door of Ma Egertons we received a warm welcome from the landlady. The surroundings were extremely clean and well presented. Our pizza, garlic bread and Prosecco were all of a high quality and extremely tasty; superb value for money. The photos on the wall of celebrities who have visited the pub gave us plenty to look at whilst we were waiting for our food. We will definitely return again.
Having reserved a table, I feel the location could have been better. Similarly, when paying for food and drinks by credit or debit card, it is more convenient to make a single payment at the end of the session, rather than multiple transactions. It is also helpful for the receipt to itemise what has been paid for. Apart from that, the atmosphere and history is 'top' !
Glad I booked very busy, had to find a chair as someone had taken one of ours, Not the staffs fault, on a plus side the pizza's we eat were lovely and I am not a big pizza lover. Would go again before we watch a show at the empire very convenient place to eat on the door step.
Pizzas were great and service fab, would definitely go back. A little on the dark side as the pub is only small but we ate outside and watched all the comings and goings including a wedding party as the station is right next door. Overall a lovely experience.
Excellent venue with very tasty food - real scouse on a cold February day - the staff could not have been friendlier and with the warm fire in this old style public house we could have stayed there all day
