Firing up the charcoal under the appetites of Dalston and Shacklewell, Mangal II is a Turkish ocakbasi restaurant whose centrepiece is a traditional charcoal grill, used to cook mouthwatering meat, seafood and vegetable dishes. Mangal II’s pedigree is assured, this being the second incarnation of entrepreneurial chef and former Istanbul resident Ali Dirik’s innovative restaurant concept. The first Mangal Ocakbasi gained a cult following in London in the early 90s, and here along Stoke Newington Road in Shacklewell the success story continues. A huge selection of meze platters and a daily stew are good starting points for any meal here, with vegetarian and non-vegetarian salads all great options. Seafood such as grilled sea bass, marinated quail and lamb spare ribs, chicken beyti with yoghurt dressing, and vegetarian moussaka all come highly recommended.
