Rather nervously, I booked this place for dinner with a visiting friend; I had no personal recommendation and was just going off web reviews. But it was pretty good and worked out well. We had the "pre-theatre menu", despite arriving at 7.45 pm on a Wednesday. We both had a very (!) simple starter of pâté and oat cakes before I had steak and chips and my friend the pork loin. These mains were good and filling. We then both had a very (!) simple dessert. To accompany the food we had some Glasgow tap water and a bottle of Chilean Merlot. The food came to about £35 and the wine £30! The wine list is not cheap at this restaurant. Overall, however, I was pleased with my choice of eatery and would go there again. It was busy, indicating that I am not alone in this judgement. The staff were very friendly and chatty.
We've been many times before and were not disappointed today. Great food, great atmosphere and helpful staff. Really accommodating with the children too, so we'll definitely be back!
Great meal and wonderful service. Thank you for a wonderful evening. Would recommend the pork dish with chorizo. Delicious. Others diners would also Dec the steak.
Finally a restaurant that has taken the time to understand dietary requirements. A lovely a la carte and pre theatre menu for gluten free. Dinner was beautiful, second visit and certainly won't be the last. Also got to speak to John quiggly who is the owner. Well done John thank you for another lovely meal.
The food and service were generally ok for the price we paid. The table we were sat at still had crumbs on it. Was reasonably busy for a Sunday afternoon.
Great location fantastic food and wonderful service, red onion is highly recommended by both myself and my husband and we will definitely be back. The gluten free menu is one of the best I have found.
Very disappointed in overall experience, staff and service was slow, despite the restuarant being empty. Food was medioca. Toilets were not very clean and three cubicles did not flush. Was very excited about dining here will not recommend to anyone or return personally.
Reliably great food & friendly staff. Wide range of delicious options to choose from with healthy & restricted dietary needs catered for. Convenient central location.
The food was delicious and the service good and attentive. Saturday was very busy but the ambience was warm and lively. The staff were very friendly.
The fact that the Red Onion actually has a separate vegan menu with choice is amazing. A chef that can take the time to make good vegan food in a nice environment in Glasgow is a novelty. We are older Vegans and like to eat out in a nice places, the combination is often hard to find in Glasgow. You can get good vegan food but its usually pub grub and this is okay but sometimes you just want an up market feel to your night out. I am a Chef and Nutritional therapist and very picky about what I eat, so enjoying a meal out can be a challenge. So well done Red Onion on offering a better service.
Superb meal , super attentive staff, I had been on a couple of occasions but this was first time for my girlfriend Jo, who loved it all. thank you,
The food was fantastic, full of flavours and presented beautifully. The service was excellent, quick, let's us alone to decide what we wanted. The place was busy with 2 big parties arriving in staff handled it superbly whilst dealing with the smaller parties dotted through the restaurant. Just a few wee pointers that could have made it prefect the table was full of salt (as if it hadn't been cleaned properly I blew it off) and the hand dryer in the ladies toilets didn't work. Food and service was delightful
We had an absolutely beautiful lunch for my group of 8. There was not a single disappointing dish. We will definitely be returning sometime soon.
Service was slow and unattentive. Forgot items & at times felt we were forgotten! Food on GF menu was not all GF. Won't be back!
Lovely restaurant. It has a very relaxed atmosphere. Food was delicious. The owner took time out from the kitchen to introduce himself and ask how the goid was which was nice.
Excellent pre theatre menu, good food, great to see John Quigley in the restaurant speaking to guests. Relaxed service and style. Booked another visit later in the year.
Been a while since our last visit, but the staff, food and ambience were wonderful as before No standards have slipped since last year, will be back a lot sooner this time
The Red Onion is a lovely place to eat. The atmosphere is calming and the food and service are excellent. My score is slightly downgraded as the steak frites we all had were quite tough and we did report this to the server who offered to bring us something else but we had no time to wait for another dish to be prepared. The other courses were delicious so I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Ate off the lunch menu, French Onion Soup was fantastic to start! Both mains were of very high quality (pork loin and lemon chicken) - couldn't fault any dish, and was very good value!
Food and service were both excellent. A minor issue with my friend's chicken dish was quickly sorted out by the friendly and helpful staff. The atmosphere was good and although it was a warm night the temperature inside the restaurant was pleasant. We were not rushed in any way and they were happy to give us a good break between our main course and our sweets. It was nice to meet John Quigley himself when he came round the tables later in the evening.
Very good pre-theatre meal, great value and friendly efficient service. Only slightly sour note was that one of our company wanted the steak, which was extra - fair enough in principle, but the scrawny shilpit piece of meat that actually came was very disappointing. Anyway it would be wrong to emphasise that (even though that's what I've just done) as the rest was really good. Maybe a one off: we all have off moments, and Mr Quigley will be no exception. Try it, it's good: but ca' canny about the steak!
Lovely lunch beautifully cooked and superb valueGood choice on menu for lunch 3 starters and 3 mains. Goats cheese starter and fresh fish goujons lovely
John Quigley gets it right every time. Unbelievable value for money also. Always a pleasure to visit. I don't get there enough! I must make more of an effort.
Another great meal, value for money all day long we'll be back as should everyone. Great friendly staff, but not in your face but always on hand. A restaurant to be proud of.
The food was great and served quickly for lunchtime. Good service as well although the bill was initially incorrect but resolved quickly without any fuss.
As we had been here before we knew what to expect but it seems to get better. Good choice on the menu for all our party and prices are reasonable. Will be back soon.
Excellent restaurant and very good service. The chef creates beautiful dishes, based on classics but with a fresh take on them. And the prices are reasonable. Definitely recommend
A nice ambience, overall. The friendly chef took the time to speak to us, the staff were engaging and appeared genuinely interested in delivering a great experience. The food ... wow ... absolutely delicious!! We were previously regular guests at a restaurant around the corner, yet thought to try Red Onion for a bit of variety, and we are absolutely thrilled that we did so. Looks like we're changing our regular lunch location!!
Really fabulous meal and nice staff. Love a restauraunt thats nice n bright shows they have nothing to hide then. Haddock fishcake was immense really tasty. Partner she had for dessert Raspberry and hot white chocolate sauce 12 out of 10 for that one.
Staff were friendly, service was good, atmosphere was good. We ate from the pre theatre menu which was good value and the food was nice.
Food excellent and service superb. This is the second time I have been and it won't be my last. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant to anyone, you are in for a treat.
Very impressed with this restaurant. Loved the red/purple design & spacious table room. I visited years ago & had forgotten what a gem it is. There was four of us & the pre-theatre menu had plenty and varied choices to suit everyone at £16.95 for 3 courses. Good amount of food but I wasn't stuffed, which was good as we were heading to the theatre. Service was professional but friendly. This is definitely on my list to revisit.
Excellent food and great ambience. It is rwakky good to find a restaurant that takes gluten free food seriously. Well worth the visit. The waitresses were wonderful too.
had the two course lunch, tasty, not exciting or innovative. Service reasonable, all in all nothing to complain about but nothing to rave about either, fair value for money.
My party and I had a lovely evening. The food was great particularly the fact that there was a good vegetarian menu. The wine prices were a bit expensive, however.
Our first time at the Red Onion, but it won't be our last. Excellent food, really good friendly service and a delightful atmosphere. We particularly enjoyed the duck, and I loved the frozen raspberries with hot chocolate sauce.
Good choice of food on a la carte menu to suit everyones taste. Pre- theatre menu v good value. All nicely presented and helpful attentive staff. Second visit and was not disappointed
Red Onion came as a complete surpise - a very pleasant one. I couldn't believe I hadn't known about it before. The food was great, the sauces delicious, the ambience comfortable and the service perfect. There is a varied choice and the menu changes each day. I will definitely be back now that I have found this treasure.
Absolutely first class. We took our son there (he is vegan, we are not!) and we all had a super meal. The waitress was extremely helpful and friendly, the atmosphere was perfect - busy but we still felt we had our own space. Nothing was too much bother and we will certainly go back next time we are in Glasgow.
Easily booked online with no fuss. The service staff were attentive and friendly. Food was absolutely lovely and had space for a pudding. Will definately be back soon.
Lovely place. I ate in Red Onion several times now and not once was disappointed. Food is just delicious. Cooked nicely and very tasty. Lovely staff. And price! What a great value for your money! Definitely place to eat if you don't want to be disappointed. They have separate menu for every allergy - not many places offers that. 5*
I visited the red onion on a recent trip to glasgow. Being celicac i am always on the search for gluten-free restaurants. This place will not disappoint. The food is excellent and well presented.
Good food as always and excellent service. Air conditioning might have improved the experience as it was very hot in the restaurant due to the good weather, however both doors were open to try and help.
Well what can I say, Fantastic meal at the red onion!!! Friendly staff. Will definitely be back soon for the gorgeous good. Thank you very much.
We usually visit Red onion prior to going to the theatre we love the food but feel a change in the set pre theatre menu would be great Set menu is ideal for our budget but we have tried all the food on this menu and feel we need to go elsewhere now in order to have something different Good service helpful staff
Great food and service as always! Partner has gluten intolerance, we love going here as they have great menu choices and the staff are all knowledgable about allergies and friendly. It's must go for lunch or dinner!
Had a brilliant night celebrating my husband's birthday with 5 of our children, I loved the options on the Gluten Free menu. Will be back.
We had a grea tweak before a servic e was attentive and everything tasted fresh. We would definitely go back and recommend to others. The cost of the meal was also very good.
We always go here when we are going to the Kings Theatre, it's a great restraunt very good service and lovely food, we didn't feel like we were being rushed, we will be back for the panto in December looking forward to it
