Started off great, starters and pre dinner snacks were to die for, for mains ordered the duck, the lovely lady assisting said it was new to the seasonal menu and although she hadn’t sampled it, described it as succulent crispy duck. Was very disappointed as it wasn’t crispy at all, the edges were dry, and not succulent duck you would expect. After one bite, I resigned my self of the meal, my dinner partner suggested I swap dishes as he had ordered the pork, tried it, was better than mine but not a big pork fan! Left my dinner, at one point the waitress checked on us as asked if everything was ok as obviously my plate was still full with my silverware obviously signing I was done. After explaining the situation, she did ask if there was anything else she could bring for me, however since we had waited a good 45 mins since starters, I didn’t want to wait to eat alone after they would have had to cook again, told my dinner partner he could have mine too if he wanted as it would go to waste otherwise. He ate my duck dish apart from the wide dry edges and the non crispy skin, the waitress asked if she could bring me more bread instead, honestly I found that a tad insulting considering the 3 course menu pricing. We declined dessert and opted for the cheese plate, 5 cheeses were amazing, however I would have them consider covering the cheese trolley as a couple of flies were sat on them then flying around during the serving. To be perfectly honest, after everything I was expecting somewhat of an accommodation on the final bill, only when I questioned after being presented with the full bill, I was offered complimentary tea/coffee in the lounge, when I declined, how about a glass of wine, hmmm, maybe read the room, I’m very disappointed, I paid the full bill and left, I understand that when menus change everything may not be up to par, but at a minimum offer a better accommodation to your clients, I’m not suggesting to not pay obviously (as I mentioned I paid in full) but 20% off accommodation would be an acceptable and reasonable resolution. Would otherwise suggest eating elsewhere, I never met nor spoke with a manager, I would have welcomed that opportunity, so I hope I finally receive a response from the team at the restaurant so I am able to update this review with a more positive outcome!

We booked a table for two which was a very simple process. A couple of days before we were to dine our daughter decided to join us. We were able to amend the booking no problem; then she tells us she was bringing her dog! Rothay Manor could not have been more helpful. I don’t know who was treated better us or the dog. Everyone was lovely, getting homemade treats, and a mat for the dog to lie on, as well as giving us our own ‘dog friendly’ room. Superb service and beautiful food. We have already booked to return and will be back again in December.

Stunning food and wine. We simply cannot fault the place. The tasting menu was amazing and beautifully complimented by the matched wine flight. The chef understands the food and taste combinations, the sommelier knew his wines and was so informative, helping us understand how the flavours in the various wines enhanced the dish it was paired with. The waiting-on staff were all excellent, making the whole evening an experience my wife and I will never forget.

We had The Great British Menu which was superb but i must say I preferred the 2week previous a la carte meal probably because you could chose what you fancied on the day! Food could have been hotter on both occasions and ice cream was rather melted. Excellent service and presentation!

We were returning to Ambleside to celebrate our 35th Wedding Anniversary, having spent our honeymoon there in 1984. Chose Rothay Manor as it was close to our holiday cottage. As the above ratings show we were delighted with our choice for our celebratory lunch!!

Lovely food. Attentive service- staff took on board any comments made. The canapes were delicious - I could have happily just had large plates of them. Wine rather expensive tho.

Fantastic food, atmosphere and service, one of the best meals we've had. Also, the restaurant was fantastic with dietary requirements, going the extra mile to make every dish interesting and complete despite allergies.
