brilliant vegan food, staff brilliant and knowledgeable, great atmosphere. loved it
Fantastic! Friendly service and amazing food. We had a lovely night. I was especially surprised by the southern fried “chicken”. Nice vegan wine too, although i was unable to buy it by the glass (white wine).
Totally top marks for Source. Very good food, delicious menu, locally sourced ingredients, freshly cooked, comfortable seating, warm atmosphere, very pleasant service - all 100% authentic, and with sight lines into the team of chefs' kitchen. Hurray! no taped music. Human voices and conversation, and relaxed environment. Family party of health conscious adults and burger-and-brownie-loving children all had a good time.
Great meat and vegetarian bbq-style food. Beautiful place, with a laid-back atmosphere and a variety of excellent wines (even a few vegan ones!) on offer.
Excellent choice for vegans, vegetarians AND meat-eaters. Very accommodating to dietary requirements, with lovely, warm service. If you've never envisaged such a thing, the vegan fried chicken is a must!
We took our 2 grandchildren aged 4 and 7 years before a panto. They chose from children's menu. One had pasta which went down well but the other had pizza which didn't. My husband had risotto and I chose haloumi from the starter menu and salad. Both were good. Disappointedly tea came in a MUG! at £2.50! Come on Source you can do better. Tea must always come in a teapot unless you are in a takeaway or transport cafe! The children then had ice cream. It was an OK meal but did not go beyond that. Total was £40.
Cosy, small, restaurant, good service and lovely food. Good vegetarian selection on the menu. I had the avocado and then the halloumi stack. Simple dishes but very tasty.
Fried squid starter was well cooked and not at all overdone The beef brisket was a major disappointment as it was really dry and very chewy with no sauce at all The sides like the slaws and the fries were good but the main let the sides down
Source is a hard place to categorise. I've never been anywhere quite like it with a strong focus on vegetarian and to a lesser extent vegan food while also having excellent meat dishes. Decor is kind of rustic modern minimalist with excellent informal service. We were booked to eat at 18:00 and the last of our party didn't arrive until 18:30 but it was no problem. Only one of our party went for a meat tray and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rest of us went for veggie or salad dished. My Shakshuka, a kind of eggs in purgatory dish with more vegetables, was brilliant. Great flavour and just a little chilli heat. Also, make sure you try the cornbread which is beautifully light. No one could manage a pudding but the menu was interesting. Finally, the bill was very reasonable.
Food was ok, quite large portions- especially of the hummus, service was ok, they were running out of the wine that we ordered but they saved a second bottle for us which was very good service we thought
Great find in York. Menu very accommodating to gluten-free customers and veggies. Inventive and tasty dishes and service was fantastic. I would definitely go there again.
Booked here while visiting Christmas markets and it was a good job we did - restaurant was very busy but staff very attentive we were not rushed or felt pressured to turn tables. Food very good and l could eat the black pudding and soft breaded egg all day long - home made brown sauce mmmmm. Great glaciers and fab service - very nice place and we will be back.
Pulled pork burgers and the starters were good (grilled avocados and spiralled potato), but vegetarian mains (coconut and vegetable curry and whole cauliflower) were tasteless.
A warm, friendly greeting; relaxed, informal surroundings; comfortable, cosy seating with cushions; and all of this BEFORE we considered the variety of menu options! With something for everyone, we chose to start with the spiralled potatoe (warm, delicately fried slices of potatoe on a skewer... ) and freshly made humous (more chickpea than tahini - if any - low on garlic and lemon, so the emphasis is on freshness and chickpeas) with warm flatbreads. “YUM!” To drink, a rare opportunity for a “glass” of Gavi rather than the usual “bottle restriction” in other restaurants! And Yorkshire Blackout; a chocolatey, treacley, malted dark beer - one of the best! For our mains... Ratatouille (circular slices of veg in a rich tomatoe sauce presented in an earthenware bowl), which was perfectly balanced, and Tabbouleh (bulgur wheat grains, broccoli, toasted almonds, goji berries, pumpkin seeds, to name a just a few ingredients). We shared a Yorkshire Halloumi, gently fried in honey to offset the saltiness. All of this left no room for dessert or coffee, much to our disappointment! The open kitchen added to the honest warmth of this eaterie, and with attentive and helpful service from Amber, “Source” at Castlegate is now one of our favourite York restaurants, and we’ve tried dozens! Looking forward to our next visit... Anthony & Andrea :-)
Fabulous food, lovely staff and superb atmosphere. Couldn’t have been better. We took our staff for their Xmas party and everyone was well impressed. Many thanks
It was very good as always. The food was nice but the service was really good. There was a mix up with our order and it was sorted immediately. :)
We had an amazing experience from start to finish. Staff were welcoming and the table was more than big enough for our party. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu and her recommendations were superb. The food was fresh and very tasty. They even accommodated us on paying separately.
Really nice place with a good vibe. The service was great, the food even better. Great selection of veggie food and not. We will definitely go back there again
I went with my 70 year old parents...we all thought Source had lovely food, great service and a cozy atmosphere! Some how the outside doesn't match up to the inside...don't be put off!
Lovely staff, the food a drinks were delicious. Vegetarian options were the reason we visited and we weren't disappointed, the food was really well cooked and tasty. The ambiance is just right. Had a really good time, thank you.
Very nice meal with delicious wine. Beautiful decor and perfect service, staff were polite and helpful without being intrusive which is how good customer service should be done :-)
The food was high quality and the service attentive, though our waiter made unnecessary comments about my partner not having finished her meal, which made her slightly uncomfortable. Overall, however, the atmosphere, decor, and speed of service were all ideal.
Great atmosphere, great service and above all a great selection of vegetarian options. Will certainly be visiting again, even if just to have the nachos topped with smoked jack fruit, a revelation
Really good food with a good selection. Staff were friendly and efficient. Lovely surroundings with good decor and a lively and relaxed atmosphere. Would highly recommend.
Well-thought menu - I had the black bean salad with a side of halloumi. A good range of gins, including some local Yorkshire ones, and excellent service.
We had a really enjoyable meal at Source. The service was attentive, friendly and helpful, and the choices we made (all vegetarian) were excellent. Good wines too.
Good food, great service. Good attention to our needs with regard to gluten free food. Useful suggestion for post meal drinks away from the rowdy town centre bars.
The diners thought the choice of menu was excellent, atmosphere was good and the prices were very reasonable. Will definitely book again in the future.
Relaxed place and lovely staff. Food was great, I would recommend Source for vegetarians, but non veggies could add meat on if preferred. We should have got onto the desserts - they looked delicious!
Fantastic restaurant. Casual vibe but excellent food and friendly staff. Everything was spot on, from the bottle of water placed on the table when we sat down (without asking), to the speed of service, menu choice (drinks and food), right through to paying the bill.
Brilliant food and service, excellent atmosphere. Good menu that's quite original, with good choice for a lot of dietary requirements. Quite pricey but the food and drink is so worth it!
Good service the food was reasonably priced, fresh and tasty. A good menu with plenty of veggie options. A good choice for a great lunch in the city centre.
Fantastic , lovely venue , ambience and great food , served by very friendly staff. This was a retirement lunch for a work colleagues including vegetarians , great choices for all on the menu.
Great food and service - highly recommend! Great selection of meats, vegetarian and vegan options which suited the table. Also great with dietary requirements too.
Great food and service - Thoroughly recommend. Choice for everyone Vegan for wife, Meat for me. Interesting food and drinks menu. Good value. Give it a go.
Had a brilliant meal at Source for a colleague's leaving do. The food was great, the service was good and there was a lovely atmosphere. Will definitely go back.
My brisket tray was tasty, my wife's salad was a bit boring. Nice place, friendly staff. Music was a bit up-tempo for background while eating.
One of the best vegan meals I've ever had, the vegan fried chicken is amazing! The staff were absolutely lovely and I'd recommend to anyone!
Really helpful Waitress who went out of her way to check food for an unusual allergy. Food was very tasty and looked good too. Ambiance very relaxed and prices very reasonable.
Exceptional food, staff & atmosphere. Mixed meat platter was amazing! Great central location, good vibe and decent price for what you get. Really enjoyed it!
