Given the current climate surrounding COVID-19, many authorities are placing restrictions on social gatherings. London’s Lambeth, just south of the river has a handful of interesting restaurants, and at Steax Bar and Brasserie, locals can add an excellent steakhouse to the tally. This is a place that takes meat seriously, so diners can expect their steaks cut to order. The team pride themselves on the superior quality of their ingredients and their attention to detail, both of which make this St. George’s Wharf restaurant a great addition to the Lambeth dining scene.
On this particular occasion I took my mother there for her birthday. We were seated shortly after arriving and waited around 5 minutes before getting the menu. We very quickly decided what we wanted to eat but it took around 10 minutes for us to be served despite it being quiet and also waiving to try get the waiters attention. Once we were served we were then told we couldn't order any starters, sides or deserts and the only things we could order were from the main course menu as they had turned off the cookers. We asked the waiter to ask if the chef could make an exception but come back very quickly and said no. So we placed our order for the main course and as I was unhappy at least because we were not told on arrival that they would only be serving main courses, I asked to speak to the manager. At first the manager was quite abrupt but then after explaining it was my mothers birthday he changed his tone and was very apologetic but could not override what the chef had said and as a result compensated us with a bottle of house champagne. I was still not happy particularly as the manager also appeared to be drunk. I haven't returned since and it may be a very long while before i do again. It's a shame as this use to be the first place I would recommend to anyone but it has gone really down hill!!
Amazing 5 star food which compromises the price. Outstanding table service and very friendly staff. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, I will definitely be going back.
Make sure you eat downstairs in the bar as there was no atmosphere upstairs in the restaurant, also the decor nicer downstairs. Food really good and staff very friendly
While steaks are the first order of business at Steax Bar and Brasserie on St. George’s Wharf in Lambeth, there are some other options for the less-carnivorously minded. And though there’s nothing that would convince us to counsel diners to stray from the warm embrace of Steax Bar and Brasserie’s meats, there’s great vegetarian options, salads, and seafood, too, that provide tasty alternatives if red meat really isn’t your thing.
Central London’s restaurants offer plenty of steakhouses, but to find really good, meat-orientated steakhouses, diners need to look further afield. Lambeth’s Steax Bar and Brasserie is exactly this kind of restaurant, and steaks here are cut to order and available in the range of cuts. For those with more modest appetites, there are great burgers and a handful of other dishes (curry and goulash standout here) as well as excellent, fresh seafood and shellfish. St. George’s Wharf locals are fortunate to have a quality steakhouse of Steax Bar and Brasserie’s calibre for great meat and seafood dishes.
