The food was excellent but we seemed to have to wait a long time for service at every stage. The restaurant wasn’t busy but it took ages the food to arrive. Though I must say the staff were very pleasant and the food was lovely.

Pleasant surroundings. Staff are welcoming & friendly. Food is excellent & tasty. The price you pay is fair for the quality of the food, & the service.

The noise level really spoilt my first visit. It was impossible to have a conversation across the table. I had heard great things about the Hornblower but doubt that I will return.

Considering not many customers, the waiting time was a bit lengthy. The food was excellent however.

It was a quiet Tuesday lunchtime but the service was not very attentive. We asked for a large jug of water without ice and the barman brought it to the table with ice. When we pointed this out he said "you could have told me before". I sincerely hope this was a joke but I was unsure at the time. My main course had a large piece of plastic in it which I started chewing by mistake. The waiter was apologetic and immediately said he would replace the dish and that he would reduce the cost for this course by 50%. He later advised he had removed the cost from the bill totally. This aspect of the service was dealt with quickly and professionally. When he brought me the dish again he forgot to bring cutlery and it took time for us to grab his attention as he was talking to other customers who were drinking at the adjacent table. My colleague also requested the set menu but requested one of the main courses from the al a carte and said she would pay extra for the dish. The waiter said this was not possible without any explanation. I do think this showed a lack of flexibility and an explanation goes a long way to ensure reasons for decisions are clear. I do think that both the service and food was mediocre especially given the lack of customers. Although both barman and waiter were friendly we both felt that they had other priorities; customers always like to believe they come first! I am also unsure how a large piece of plastic ended up in my main course. The waiter didn't offer an explanation. The decor also needed an update. The seats we sat on were very stained. We also had to ask the waiter to clean our table when we sat down. He did this very quickly and thoroughly but it really should have been cleaned before we sat down given the lack of customers and the fact that the waiter offered us this table. The toilets needed a deep clean in my opinion. We were not very impressed overall. We won't be going again which is a real shame because the building is absolutely beautiful and it is situated in a perfect location in the centre of Oakham.

Great choice of interesting food. Hake dish was excellent. Service a bit iffy to start with but perfectly OK as time went on. Noisy folk at a near-by table impacted a bit.

Lovely setting and certainly different from the ‘chain’ restaurants. Friendly and interested staff, highly recommended. The food was freshly cooked and not out of the freezer.

Lovely food and ambiance. Very long wait for food- quite a number of tables were ordering at same time. Very efficient waiter but most of the time he was the only one taking orders- more staff needed in kitchen and taking orders or reservations should be staggered.

The Admiral Hornblower is a beautiful Pub, it has a lovely feeling as soon as you walk in the door. The food is lovely, hearty well cooked meals that are value for money with obvious fresh ingredients. The room we stayed in was very unusual, lots of space with a huge bathroom. Will visit again.

A very pleasant lunch, portion size just right and cooked to high standard "praise to cooks" because that is what they do, this is not as insult to their skills (chef means chief nothing to do with their craft). Service good but not over bearing. Nice ambiance. Just a touch cold sitting by the window at the restraunts table. Priced not silly for this quality. Would and will recommend.

Excellent service from the simple to use on-line booking through to paying the bill. Choice of food & drink was excellent and well presented. The restaurant was full this lunchtime but service was maintained to a high standard due to the number of staff in place. Have used this restaurant on a number of occasions & have always enjoyed the experience. Would highly recommend it.

I've been to the Hornblower numerous times for Sunday lunch, but this was the best I've had yet. Friendly service, nice atmosphere, tasty food, sensible portions sizes. Despite my first choice of roast chicken being sold out, I was offered a suitable chicken alternative immediately which came with all the roast trimmings and was very tasty. My kids really enjoyed their meals and had empty plates! The service was the best it's ever been to date: I only had to ask for something a second time once - which is an improvement on previous visits!! Just let us down slightly at the end by taking too long to offer us the bill & I had to find someone to ask. But it's all getting better and I'd recommend!

Excellent meal in a very busy bar at 6:30pm so clearly a popular place to go. The atmosphere was great and dogs are welcome with absolutely no fuss. We shall be going back! Thank you.

The service was excellent. Our table was booked at 4pm and we often worry that the food, after a busy service on a Sunday, might not be of top quality. This was not the case, the food was divine. We would strongly recommend the Admiral Hornblower to visitors to Rutland and surrounding areas.

A rather disappointing Sunday lunch. Roast pork wasn't good, and no sign of any crackling!!!! Not up to their previous standards, won't be rushing back.

The Admiral Hornblower is a great pub, in the heart of Oakham, with a stylish restaurant area. The food was delicious and the service excellent. We were served by a young waiter assistant by a waitress on her first shift, but both were excellent and provided a first class experience.
