We love this place! The people are so lovely and friendly. A beautiful pub with lots of character and the food is always delicious. We had a fabulous Sunday roast but the best bit was the pear and almond tart!! Would fully recommend!

We had reserved a table for 5 with a dog at least a couple of days beforehand for dinner and when we got there they had placed us in the bar area this was expected as the restaurant area isn't dog friendly however it was in a tiny nook with the tables at knee height. You cannot expect people to eat at a table that low including the fact they tried to fit 3 people around a tiny round table that is only suitable for 3 drinks... The six nations rugby was on so most tables were full. Eventually we were moved and placed onto a bigger table and this was fine. The wait for food was a bit longer than we would have liked but the only good bonus was that the food was great.

We were school friends reuniting for our 70th birthdays. We came from all corners of England, and the Malt Shovel was a good choice as somewhere central, easy to get to, and good food and atmosphere.

Different chef today apparently but still good. Paddy makes the most amazing sticky toffee pudding and the portion size is huge, which is a huge + for me.

This was my second lunchtime visit here within a couple of months but the service on this occasion was disappointing. It was very slow, despite not being that busy (a weekday lunchtime) - it was much better on our previous visit. Our orders weren't complicated, but having booked a table for midday, and getting our order in by 12.20, we didn't receive our food till after 1pm. This was particularly difficult for one of our group who has Parkinson's so can't sit still for long periods. Although the food was good, unfortunately on this visit the service did not match our previous excellent experience here.

We have been serval times to the malt shovel and have a different experience each time. Today was not great we both had a roast dinner, I had roasted pork belly... It was very fatty there was no crackling and only one piece !! My partners beef was very rare. We ordered two drinks ...one of which was an orange squash and water ... £2-20!!!!!! I mean I can go to a supermarket and buy a bottle of squash for that... Having worked in hospitality for over 30 years I know that squash should not be this expensive that is a ridiculous price!!!when I questioned the waiter about the price of the squash he told me that was the price and that was that!! The restaurant was cold, we weren't asked if everything had been ok. Unfortunately we won't be returning
