Lovely village pub. Intimate with good diverse lunch menu and plenty of homemade specials and deserts. Staff were helpful and they had a small selection of real ales. Recommended.

Our group of 10 had a delightful 2 hour walk, finishing at The Malt Shovel, where we found a warm welcome and an attractive menu. The service was friendly, good value and the meal very good. We will be back!

The malt Shovel was very welcoming and service was excellent. Our food was delicious and well presented and the choice was very good. Desserts delicious too. My two companions and I enjoyed a very happy and relaxed time over our meal, and nobody hassled us to leave. I would certainly visit the Malt Shovel again and recommend it to my friends.

Staff were very helpful, food was excellent, best steak in a long time, the only downside was the near hour wait for food to arrive, otherwise excellent we will go back

Having eaten here before and being aware of the generous portions we decided to have 4 starters between the three of us. That also left room for a pudding! The food was excellent, as was the service.

Nice friendly pub - it was very quiet on the night we went - not much "buzz" but I have to say I had the best steak i"ve had in many years - worth going again just for that!

The Malt Shovel is a traditional old pub in a quiet rural location. Have visited before but the ownership has changed since then and the meals are now Ok but not as good as previously. The pub was quite busy and although the staff were polite and pleasant the service was a little slow.

We had not been to the Malt Shovel for some time but decided an hour before to try again for lunch on our Wedding Anniversary. Reserving a table was very easy and efficient. The pub/restaurant is charming, full of character and nicely laid out without table crowding. The menu is varied and reasonably priced. We both chose Sea Bass which was excellent. The service was pleasant, friendly and attentive. We will certainly return and remarked yesterday evening that it is a good place to take visiting friends. We also remarked that it is the best restaurant meal we have experienced for quite a while.

Eaten here several times. Always a warm welcome. Excellent service. The waiting staff are very attentive but not overbearing. As for the food it never disappoints and that's why they get repeat customers.

This was out first visit to The Malt Shovel, we were staying at a B&B in Knaresborough & had picked up the details from their website. We were shattered after a very long journey, but were soon revived by a very warm welcome, excellent wine and a fabulous meal! We both agreed it was the best food we'd had on our week long holiday, it was all beautifully presented, well-cooked and delicious. We will return if we are in the area again and would highly recommend a visit based on our experience.

went for lunch and ordered the roast beef . the meal was excellent in that the meat ,Yorkshire pudding and the roast potatoes were very well cooked and a joy to eat. However the vegetables were not to my taste either undercooked or virtually raw , such is the fashion , I am led to believe .So these were returned with a note for the chef.I was pleasantly surprised to enjoy a sweet on the house , in view of my comments on the main meal.

The Rabbit Gnocchi was in a delicious sauce, the Moroccan lamb was tasty and tender. My wife enjoyed the French onion soup and similarly tender slow-cooked belly pork. The portions were generous so we could only manage some creamy Brymor ice-cream for dessert. The Malt Shovel is a half hour drive from home but definitely worth the journey. We'll be back to try something else from their interesting and varied menu.

Was not inspired. Thought I would try something a bit different for a change and had the Rabbit gnocchi . I expected the rabbit to be inside the gnocchi , my mistake, so ordered chips to go with it. Ended up with a lot of potato and a very bland rabbit stew. A bit more involvement from the staff as to what the dish consisted of would have been nice . Although there wasn't anything particularly wrong with the food I found the whole experience a bit flat.

Sunday lunch for two meat eaters and a vegetarian. Food was delicious and high quality cooking and presentation: everyone was well fed and satisfied. Lovely 'cosy' feel to eating area in bar, yet with sufficient space between tables not to feel squashed in. This was our second visit and we will return again. Make sure that you book for Sunday lunch - disappointed potential customers were turned away....

Lovely pub, lovely food - the tables for 2 are all a bit squashed and tiny - the tables for 4 or more much more comfortable

Very pretty country pub and very busy Good service, no bar area so dogs not welcome. For a pub that advertises walks a mistake (and should be mentioned on website) Food was bland and uninspired especially the scotch egg starter

We were welcomed into a delightful old pub, with modernisation done very sympathetically to the age of the building. There was a roaring fire on a wet and windy night giving us great comfort. The service was excellent and the food outstanding. We could tell the quality of the ingredidents was good as the dishes were absolutely delicious and the presentation was modern, but not overdone. The plates looked inviting to eat, which is how it should be. For information we ate: doubled cooked soufflé, black pudding scotch egg, slow cooked belly pork (with crackling), venison and then chocolate pots for pudding. Yummmm.

We used to go to The Malt Shovel in Brearton when the previous owners had the pub. The food there was always good. On our recent meal there, under the new owners, the food was equally good.

We have been to the Malt Shovel before and never had a bad meal. I had crayfish salad, yummy, my husband fish cakes. We both had liver for our mains, slightly overcooked for us as we eat it very pink, but not enough to complain. Puddings were really good, rice pudding for my husband bread & butter for me. All very yummy. Felt sorry for the young man serving he was alone for most of the time and the phone kept going, despite this he smiled and was very good at looking after everyone. Whatever they are paying him it isn't enough!

Not to usual standard in terms of having to wait for our food and my husband's order not being fulfilled (although the dish he got was lovely, just not what he had ordered). However, the recovery was great We did not have to complain - complimentary drinks were offered as we had had to wait, and my husband's dish was taken off the bill. Class. We will certainly return.

Very nice restaurant. Food was fantastic. We had various dishes -- prawns and the 'smoke' for starters, then venison, belly pork and calves liver for the main course, then bead and butter pudding and lemon posset for dessert. All great. Very friendly service. Prices quite reasonable.
