Bourbon & Black’s universe begins, and ends, with their pride and joy, that hallowed top shelf racked with bottle after bottle of the world’s finest bourbon whiskies. Limited runs, old classics, and upstarts on the scene all make an appearance at this Didsbury bar, and there’s even a few cameos from bourbon’s cousin rye. Whether you’re a man mad for an Old Fashioned, a chic Manchester chick dreaming of Manhattan over a Manhattan, or a neat and naughty Keith Richards type, Bourbon & Black’s Wilmslow Road watering hole has your back when it comes to the beloved oak barrelled hard stuff.
And then there’s the Black, the sublimely curated food menu that takes its cues from international cuisines and offers Didsbury and Manchester’s foodies a range of charcoal-grilled delights and then some. Bourbon & Black’s theatre kitchen is the other star of the show, the other half that gets diners primitive appetites going. Southern jalapeno poppers, mussels and bones, AKA racks of ribs, best sauced in Bourbon & Black’s signature sauce. Burgers and gourmet sandwiches call up chargrilled chicken and beef, pulled pork, and nut and cheese vegetarian patties for the less carnivorously inclined. All manner of succulent steaks are stellar options at this Wilmslow Road eatery, seasoned with the house dry rub and served with grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, crispy kale and hand-cut chips. Bass heads and the cod-eyed will tip their hats to Bourbon & Black’s fresh seafood selection, too, and don’t forget to finish with the bourbon butterscotch sticky toffee pudding.
brilliant food and service, at a great price! the menu was appealable to all people and the atmosphere and interior made the restaurant feel really quirky. AMAZING cocktails
Great food & service. The staff were polite & courteous. I had the Deluxe burger and my partner had the pulled pork on mac and cheese.
Fantastic food, service and value. Great starters (Prawns & Meatballs and Ribs to die for. We used a taste card which makes it even greater value.
Food was amazing, staff were brilliantly! We has the steak which was perfectly done - need to order sides but these are not expensive so woo tasty! Would recommend a visit!
The food and drinks were great, we'll defiantly be going back! However, we thought going out for a bite to eat on a Monday would be a smooth affair! we waited 15 minutes to order drinks which took a further 10 minutes to arrive (were worth the wait, the Apple Moonshine was just a delight) Food took nearly an hour to hit the table we only ordered mains, a Burger and the Ribs. The fresh cut chips were stone cold, but were quickly changed. Quality of the food was great, Ribs were tasty Burger was fantastic, we both had food envy of the tables around us which is drawing us back to try more of the menu! We were told when we came to pay the bill which had a surprise 50% discount offer on the food that they were extremely short staffed and the place did seem to have all the covers arrive around the same time. just seemed poor planning on their part not to spread the covers out to allow for the staff crisis. We'll be going back soon in the hopes we'll have a faster service, the atmosphere and lubrication from the cocktails made for a lovely chilled out evening which was really nice actually, just a pity we were both really hungry otherwise it'd have been a 6!!
Came here looking for Steak on a night when the nearby 'Cau' was booked up. Best decision ever! Great service from knowledgeable staff and an ample menu with some nice touches to make it stand out from the countless other 'burger and grill' joints in Manchester: The house sauce is delicious, although the steak is so good it doesn't need it, and the 'grilled salad' redefines eating your greens! Finished off with Cocktails from their truly creative menu. Again, really impressed (Popcorn Old-Fashioned! Who'd think of that?!). I'm not sure Cau will be getting a look-in now, wouldn't be able to do much better and looks like they pack the tables in a bit.
I have eaten at the restaurant a few times since it opened and below is list of my experiences: Food: Simple but well cooked, steaks are good. Whole Seabass is really good although on the last visit they had very little fish on the menu except a cod fillet which I was told was delicious by someone in our party of 4. Ribs starters were a decent portion and very tender. Setting: Comfortable booths upstairs although a little chilly. Downstairs, relaxed with both high and low tables. The decor of exposed brick and rustic feel is comfortable but definitely could do with a little more heating in winter. Chilled music generally plays at a good volume. Service: Staff are welcoming but waiting to order or getting the bill at the end of the meal can be a little lengthy at times. They had missed a few bits off the order and informed us. The wait was short for them to arrive. Dessert were very limited so we decided against ordering.
Great service, great food and great atmosphere! The food arrived promptly and the servers were attentive. No mistakes were made and they even let me order multiple sides/starters in a tapas style instead of my main. The upstairs is beautiful and I'd definitely request sitting up there again. I'd recommend Bourbon & Black to anyone.
The Didsbury Bourbon & Black has a relaxed atmosphere. The food was excellent, ingredients were fresh and delivered to our table promptly. The staff are friendly and are willing to talk through the menu with you. The cocktails were two for £10 and very nice they were too!
We were seated within 1-2 minutes of entering as there were people waiting in front of us. The waitress was very helpful and enthusiastic and our food came out relatively quickly. The Merlot wine was lovely and the atmosphere upstairs was very chilled. If we had time we would have liked to have stayed downstairs and check out the bar area and try some of the whiskies. For the money wasn't sure the food was worth the same prices but I would like to give it another try and see. The food was good but I didn't feel like it wowed me hence the 4/6 mark. We went on a Saturday evening around 8pm and made a reservation, the restaurant looked busy.
The food was overall very nice. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere at Bourbon & Black in Didsbury was very welcoming and I would recommend going there. I cannot wait to go back there again to try other dishes on their menu!
A very nice setting and good atmosphere, with very tasty food. The service needs a little improvement however. Our drinks order was taken quickly, but took over half an hour to come. A lot of what we wanted was not available from the menu, which we weren't made aware of initially, and even when half of the food had come, one of my friends was told his food wouldn't be available. We had to remind the staff to bring several items. The food itself was very tasty, a very good steak and we ordered some sauce with it, which was also very good. The cocktail I had was delicious. The staff realised it had not been ideal and knocked a considerable amount off the bill, which was good of them. The food was lovely, but it was just a bit of work to get it!
The food was lovely, the staff were friendly and there was a good atmosphere. The only let down was that there were no condiments on the table, which meant salt & pepper arrived 10 minutes after the food was served. We had to chase up the drinks order too as the restaurant got busier, but otherwise it was a lovely meal out with friends and we would definitely return.
Great meal and wonderful service, Emily served us and was absolutely on point all night. I actually felt terrible because I had no cash with me and paid by card and the machine didn't offer me the chance to give her a tip. Sorry Emily but your servce was amazing and the food, as always was fantastic!
Cold and lonely atmosphere in a modern bare brick look restaurant with decent enough food but a limited menu and small portions. Reasonable wine and very attentive waiter who should really find a better restaurant. £50 for two burger and chips and a bottle of wine seems a little steep. I remember the place from the late 90s when it was a fabulous Spanish family run establishment, superb Tapas and then waiters appearing with guitars to add that little bit extra. Heaven only knows how many incarnations of the premises there have been since then but sadly, I cannot recommend this one.
Service was very good with friendly staff. The setting of this restaurant was very nice - far nicer than restaurants of this nature usually are. Very professional set up. Wine was very good (I had a Malbec) though didn't get a chance to try to the cocktails which was a shame. Food was decent - the rib portion was huge so would recommend ladies go for the starter sizes as I got nowhere near finishing mine.
Service good, decor impressive, food average. We had ribs (dry but sauce tasty) & prawns to start. Chicken burger & chefs burger for mains. The burgers were dry and not that tasty, the chips and coleslaw were good. Also the toilets could do with renovation - there are broken & missing wall tiles & the seat was chipped. With 1 beer each the bill was over £50, which I thought was a bit pricey.
Fantastic staff, food and drinks will be back to try more of the menu!! Delicious food from the corn chowder and the plantain dumplings and the ribs and the sticky toffee pudding a must visit!! You won't be disappointed, plus a good mix of music too and decor.
Been here many times and usually really good but this is a venture that is rapidly going downhill. Ordered 2 starters and two steaks. Was informed that the steak didn't come with any sides... this has to be a recent change as they used to come with chips... The mains arrived before the starters, and when the starters did arrive one was missing. Sirloin was ordered medium rare, arrived without a hint of blood and only a little pink... i.e. overdone. It was very quiet considering it was a Sunday afternoon but service was slow to the point we ended up going down to the bar to get the bill. The menu has been whittled down considerably with only a narrow choice of dishes available these days. Genuinely used to love this place but we won't be back.
Had the pigs in blankets & meatballs for starters, burgers for mains with chips & slaw & topped off with a cornflake tart to share. All very tasty. Good service by our attentive waitress. Couple of items were not available on the menu, which I think is quite limited anyway. Overall nice evening.
Great food, great service, and great ambience. I love the rustic and jazzy feel of the place, but last night it was let down by the music which was completely out of sync with the restaurant style (it was rock music such as Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, ACDC - awful!). Would recommend otherwise.
I went here for a birthday meal with family. The atmosphere was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive. When there was a minor problem with the starter the waitress sorted the problem straight away. The mains were excellent and I was absolutely stuffed by the end! Very good, would recommend.
The food was beautiful - we had he tomahawk steak to share and was divine and the staff were great. The reason for the marks down are quite a few things out of stock on an already small menu - the chicken I'd originally wanted wasn't there and we waited an hour for the steak - although worth the wait!
Food was great; I had stick which was cooked to my perfection. Service was abit slow but we didn't mind. Fantastic cocktails. There was a group of girl that's was absolutely steaming blind drunk and was very loud but it was cope able. Defo go again.
Great service and great food. Jack who served us was brilliant. Helped us choose drinks and food and was really friendly. Unfortunately we didn't manage dessert so will have to go back to try the cornflake cake!
If you book in January it's 50% off but I would still pay the full price for the excellent Chateaubriand that they serve. The bartender made us up some great non-alcoholic cocktails to go with it.
Me and my partner went here for valentines day and the food was absolutely amazing we have been to numerous of 5* restaurant's and this topped them off. We would defintely recommend this place to anyone.
Lovely meal and atmosphere - we shared the pigs in blanket and then had burgers and a cookie ice-cream dessert. All the three courses were tasty and we left feeling stuffed! We will be back! :)
Really great eat, would go back again. Really friendly service and the food was really nice. Decor was quirky and the wine was lovely. Ask for a taxi number and the staff were kinds enough to book one for us after our meal.
Food arrived very quickly. Nice atmosphere. Very friendly staff. Delicious food! Would definitely recommend! Only issue was the table we were sat at at the top of the stairs was annoying because the table vibrated everytime someone walked up or down the stairs.
We shared the chateaubriand, and a glass of Malbec. Meat was very high quality, properly cooked, well seasoned, and a good price. Service was prompt and friendly but gave us space on our date. I will definitely go back and would recommend.
Lovely evening, served by a young blonde girl who was lovely, friendly and knew a lot about the menu. Already recommended to lots of friends and we are planning a meal for ten of us.
The food was delicious. We had the tomahawk which was cooked perfectly and I would come back just for the pigs in blankets. Service was great. I look forward to going back again.
Excellent food! The steaks are amazing, and cooked to perfection!! We had a lovely family Christmas Eve get together in a lovely setting and were looked after very well. Would definitely go again!
First of all I love your pigs in blankets. They are the best BUT the food always comes slightly cold and the ribs which I have had on 2 occasions have been cold and hard and chewy (not soft and tender). The chateaubriand that I have had on 2 occasions now has also come slightly cold. Such a shame as I really like this place.
The food was decent food, though a few things on the menu were not available. Long waiting times for food even though the restaurant was only half full. The room was also pretty cold, with cold air blowing through a large crack in the ceiling. Wouldn't go again because plenty of other places do food just as good with better service and lower prices.
Lovely friendly staff and the fillet steak was gorgeous. Live music playing downstairs. Would definitely recommend this place but if you want to order the chateaubriand be aware that it takes over 40mins to cook so book early!
The food and drink were excellent! Friendly and helpful staff explaining all the different types of bourbon and how they're made. Good atmosphere and music. Would highly recommend Bourban and Black!
Great place for a tasty grill. Food is cooked and served efficiently. Service is average some of the staff are a little moody, but it the food makes up for it.
Great food but could do with more veggies or garnish with steak dish. Building was a little draughty & hubby thought he could smell damp. Service was a tad slow but other than that it was good.
After a slow service the time before visiting B & B we avoided going for a while to see if service improved. A half full top floor we thought was ideal for a decent service. Unfortunately service and quality had both diminished. After a 30 minute wait for a Chateaubriand, the waiter informed us that it would be another 10 minutes wait. Fobbed off, another 25 minutes later we were served a small, dry cut of beef along with boiled broccoli rather than the chargrilled that it was supposed to be served with. After I explained not minding waiting a whole 55 minutes if what we ordered was half decent but it was not, then it could have restored my faith. The waiter kept asking if there was anything that could be done for us to stay to eat the disappointing food and make up for the bad service but unfortunately when you wait that long for poor quality and badly cooked food - when it's presented like that it completely kills an appetite. Also it was very cold upstairs.
Been here several times now and it is honestly THE best steak in Manchester. Succulent, tender and the best homemade chips ever! Great service and fab cocktails too, highly recommended!
The staff were very friendly and the service was quick, more importantly the food was extremely tasty with good portion sizes (particularly the ribs) and was good value for money.
Always such lovely and helpful staff, the food and atmosphere is never a let down. Definitely try all the cocktails as they s one for all kinds of drinkers.
As ever impeccable food. Steak and egg sandwich was delicious, my partner had the howling Wolf burger. Decent sized burger and lots of chips. Their jalapeño poppers are amazing.
There's a two for £10 cocktail offer on. The food is great with great service and excellent cocktails! We go back regularly due to the excellent service and food.
Really good atmosphere, with live music going on downstairs. The food was incredible (try the pulled mushrooms!) and the cocktails are always served beautifully. Always happy with my visit.
Lovely restaurant. The cocktails are amazing and the pulled pork was to die for! three if us had to share one pudding due to the super generous portions. will be back to try more!
Really great food, as always, cooked to a high standard. Fantastic friendly service. This is our 3rd visit for food and we will be back plenty more times.
Excellent food. Fast, efficient and friendly service. The steaks are divine! The steak and egg sandwich I had today was delicious and their chips are PROPER chips. Excellent!
