The Butcher and Tonic is a new bar and restaurant that serves up amazing steaks and a huge selection of gin varieties in the heart of Lancaster. Found just a stone’s throw from Lancaster Castle, the main rail station and St Nicholas Arcades, The Butcher and Tonic is close to the city’s main attractions and sights. The restaurant is located in the upper floor of The Butcher and Tonic and serves incredibly juicy steaks cooked to your liking, as well as British-inspired mains like baked cod, crispy pork belly and rolled shoulder of lamb. Downstairs, you’ll find a fully functioning bar complete with over 80 gins and 11 tonics, all served by experienced bartenders who know a thing or two about making a cocktail. This city centre hotspot is known to stay busy, so book ahead of time to snag a table.
The food was delicious, everyone in our party was very happy. We all had 3 courses and you couldn't fault any of them. The serving staff were friendly, considerate and helpful. The fantastic range of gins served by a extremely knowledgeable bar tender were also very enjoyable, it was lovely to be given advice and ideas on what to try based on our individual taste preferences. I had Scallops, followed by Cornfed Chicken and finished with the Treacle tart. It was all presented beautifully and exceeded my expectations. Friends chose the 9oz fillet steaks and said they were delicious and cooked exactly as they had requested. We thoroughly recommend The Butcher and Tonic.
lovely meal in a beautiful room service excellent will be back.
Absolutely amazing, great choices of gin and delicious food all for decent prices, great service, can't find a single complaint to give here, would definitely go again! :)
Without doubt one of the best steaks we have had. Veg and salty chips were great too. Listen to the guys on gin... they know their stuff.
We we're greeted by bar staff in a friendly manner and offered drinks and then asked did we want to go upto our table or stay downstairs. We our meal which came to our table in extra quick time, maybe this was because the restaurant was not full. We did notice that they had more than enough waiting on staff. The meal was lovely and the desert aswell. The upstairs tables and chairs could have a bit more character about them to match the building. The floor maybe something to make it less noisy. Meat cooked to perfection and.vegtables not overcooked. Can't wait to go back.
Having visited here a few times when it was 'church street chop house' we were quite disappointed with the service. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. When we arrived we were asked what we would like to drink, when we said we would like the wine list, the bar tender's response seemed that of surprise and disappointment at the same time - maybe everyone who comes here now always has a g&t. The wine list was limited but we chose a bottle of red. When the waitress brought it to our table she just put the bottle down unopened with two glasses and walked off! What happened to asking if you would like to taste it and pouring each glass? We ordered just mains as we didn't fancy anything on the starters, it was a shame there were no appetitizers, bread and olives etc. I asked for my chicken kebab with salad and a side order of fries. What I got was a kebab and a plate full of fries and a very small side salad. Presentation of the food wasn't the best. It looked like something I could throw together at home. My husband enjoyed his steak, which at £25 is a good job. We didn't order desert as they seemed very small when we saw other tables being served. Our main problem was getting hold of any service.. think everyone was too involved in the quiz downstairs. In the end we had to go down stairs to pay the bill at the bar! Think this place is now so focussed on its Gin that it has forgotten about its food offering. Shame as we used to live it here.
Excellent food and the best selection of gins in the bar. Nice atmosphere as the place hasn't tried to squeeze in to many tables. We had a large table of 14 stag do next to us and it was no bother at all and not to noisy. I would definitely eat here again if visiting Lancaster. Spot on!
Delicious steaks cooked to perfection. My husband had the T bone & I had the sirloin. Fabulous quality meat! My only comment would be that the peppercorn sauce could be a bit thicker. As non-gin drinkers, the bar staff could recommend gins to suit our tastes & our drinks were absolutely lovely! We’ll definitely be back.
The food was lovely and the staff were very friendly. Only criticism is that we were put at a small table in an alcove with a few other parties so it felt very cramped and noisy even though it was an early booking and the restaurant was fairly empty at this time. I think they could have spread us out a bit as it made our experience less enjoyable as the other parties were extremely loud so we could barely hear each other
What you get at Butcher & Tonic is delicious food and good service. I thoroughly enjoyed my steak and the cheesecake I had for dessert. I appreciate that they did not clutter the table with fake flowers or candles, but it would have been nice to have coasters for the glasses. This is definitely not my last visit to this restaurant. I highly recommend it.
