Friendly, welcoming, nice ambience, good food, though early evening menu a bit limited, with emphasis on vegetarian food. Desserts uninspired, so not tempted. Very good coffee.

Venue is a little small and cozy but our visit on New Years Eve went extremely well. Friendly staff, delicious food and our food arrived out in good time despite how busy it was. Would highly reccomend.

Overall experience was ok. The starter which should have been warm was cold, they offered to replace it, as I didn't take that option they refunded it. The main course was fine. The staff were friendly and attentive and the surrounding was nice. Didn't have a problem leaving a tip.

Lovely food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. The venison was excellent. And the whisky pairings with the desserts are a great idea. Need 3 more words....

Loverly food, excellent service . Made to feel very welcome on a exceptionally cold evening in Edinburgh. Would definitely use again. Thank you Cellar Door.

A lovely dinner on a rainy Tuesday evening. The Cellar Door is cosy and friendly - we always enjoy eating here! Mackerel parfait to start, followed by venison steak (the meat dishes are particularly good) and a nice glass of wine. Warmed up in no time!

We enjoyed our early evening deal (make sure you ask for the menu if you want this option): winter chicken casserole/ fish kebabs followed by Christmas pudding/ tablet and whisky cheesecake (which came in a glass bowl, not on a plate!) Staff very friendly and helpful. My only criticism would be that the fish could have been hotter, but that is probably me. Lovely restaurant, good atmosphere and a great deal.

Very good service, from start to the end. The haggis was standard, but the bread was good. I had the venison steak, it was perfect. So over all, a good visit.

Food in general very good, if not outstanding. Cullen skink lacked a bit of flavour and might possibly have simmered a bit longer. Venison was promised medium rare, but was more medium than rare. Not bad, though. And service is nice and friendly.

The food was great and the service was good, the atmosphere is always pleasant. We went with our two young daughters and it was good to see that they could enjoy food from the main menu too.

The food was nice but nothing amazing and we could have had more. However the atmosphere was cosy and warm, good for a romantic diner.

With so much choice in Edinburgh The Cellar Door is a gem. We weren’t sure what to expect when we arrived but once down the stairs in the Cellar we were welcomed with warms and smiles. The menu at first looked limited but full of amazing local choice which did not disappoint. Great place and definitely recommend.

Relaxed and unrushed. Lunch time set menu was good value and the dishes we chose were well cooked and well presented. This was a catch-up of two friends who hadn't met up for five years, so much chatting was done. At no time did we feel that we were a nuisance for sitting so long. THANK YOU...we had a very enjoyable lunch.

Not worth the price and all was a bit mediocre. The cut of the salmon was a tail end and the tiny tiny slices of cheese for £7,95 were outrageous.

The food was great and so was the service :) The only thing that bothered us at this really nice restaurant was the music. It was something like 80-90s hits, which killed the mood a little bit.

Overpriced, nothing special. Lots of better places to go in the area with more character and choice. Service was good though, and the location is handy.

Very limited lunchtime menu and uninspiring choices. It was difficult to detect any overall Scottish theme, as advertised. We will not be returning. Service was very good, though.

Great food, excellent service in a fun environment located centrally in Edinburgh just off the Royal Mile, the best meal we had during our four day stay.

Service was very good , food was lovely. Only downside was the lighting - like eating in the dark. Having said that this wouldn’t stop us returning.

Absolutely love this place. Been 3 times now and it never fails - the staff are lovely, the food is phenomenal and it's all pretty fairly priced for what you get. For traditional Scottish food in a gorgeous setting, there's nowhere else to be.

We liked the food and the atmosphere. But we are very frustrated as we just learned that our nephew and niece bought upfront a bottle of wine to be delivered to our table, and it never got to us.

Outstanding menu and wine list, excellent and friendly service, and great atmosphere. I cannot say enough about the food and selection of wines. I have had nothing but the best service from the staff every time I have been here. It is a must-stop for me whenever I find myself in Edinburgh.

Very pleasant atmosphere. Good menu. We liked our mushroom risotto and venison. Desserts were also very good. For my taste they might offer more seafood selection. But it is really a very nice restaurant.

We've enjoyed eating at this restaurant before, so booked for lunch during the Festival. As always, the food and staff were both excellent. The restaurant was busy but was a welcome oasis of calm in a very hectic city.

The table was waiting for us and we were greeted and served by a friendly and professional team. It was tough making menu selections because we were tempted by several options but all four of us loved our choices. The emphasis is on Scottish dishes and I can confirm that the cullen skink was exceptional. They offer some relatively reasonable wines, which we enjoyed, and the espresso was very good.

Lovely food, great location and very friendly staff. We had the fish platter for two, consisting of a variety of fish each cooked to differently, making for a very interesting meal. I'd highly recommend.

We had a lovely family lunch here during the Festival, modern restaurant, polite staff and lovely food. Great choices on the Menu, perhaps more Gluten Free options would be better though.

A warm welcome and our order taken, they forgot to bring the bread and olives until they were almost ready to serve the food. Our side plates were removed unceremoniously and the food served. It was rather dull and two of us thought it was rather cold. My salmon was nicely cooked but the potatoes it sat on we're barely warm. Pub grub and not the best of that, rather than restaurant food and rather overpriced. I know it is the festival but perhaps that is your chance to show off and shiine rather than embarrass yourselves. The waitresses were lovely but something needs to get sorted out between them and the kitchen.

Very noisy and not terribly competant staff- you do not drop empty mixer bottles from a grea height into a binfull of glass, nor keep dropping and breaking glasses and stacks of trays. Food itself reasonable but no reason to return.
