They were very busy when we arrived and warned there would be a long wait but offered bread and olives which was nice. It did however take 30mins for us to be offered even a drink and I had to ask for a menu. The fish cakes I had were very nice and pate my husband had was fine. The Kilmer jars the pate came in really is a faff. The main was some time coming and the plates were cold. Steak was fine although blue rather than rare and seafood platter was ok but a bit greasy. The waitresses were friendly but please, when you clear a table take everything off the small table. I was taught never heave a table empty handed and remove any unwanted clutter. Still has starter dishes on table through out meal and had to ask for cutlery. Lots of people standing at bar which was hindering waitresses access to kitchen which was downstairs as the space was very confined. What I assumed was the owner was standing at the bar drinking wine and talking; he could have been more attentive and seen we were waiting for drinks and served us. Lady who we assumed was also owner or manager offered to call a cab and apologised for wait but too little too late. There was a private party on downstairs which might have been the problem with service, if so put on in more staff.
We’ve never been disappointed with a meal at the Chancel, the food is always amazing and the wine selection excellent. The fish stew is my personal favourite.
Good food and friendly service with loads of gluten free options. Wines were excellent so take a taxi and make the most of your evening.
The food is wonderful, all freshly cooked .The Sea Bass with scallops was just so good. The owners and staff are exceptionally friendly and attentive.
My Wife and I decided to book The Chancel for our own Christmas mini party. We had excellent service and the food was superb, the Australian Shiraz wasn't bad either!
Lovely lunch ,great wine and good service . Would prefer to sit in main restaurant area next visit . Look forward to a visit again soon .
Read a few reviews on Tripadvisors, the majority of those were all top marks or scored highly. I've also been wanting to try this place for number of years and we weren't disappointed at all, there restaurant was quiet but the service was brilliant, not over the top like some places but attentive, the food was delicious, fresh and full of flavour, also very well presented while still getting a good portion. The wine was great, my wife and I were unsure which wine to choose so the owner/waitress recommended a few and let us try them before we ordered, overall I was very impressed as was my wife who's Birthday we were celebrating and wish to return again in then war future
A restaurant we have been meaning to tick off the list for ages! It is a well run and friendly restaurant, some may say cramped but the tables in the back area are fine and its nice and quiet. The food was excellent. Calamari and duck were so well cooked. I had the rhubarb and strawberry cheesecake for dessert and have to say it is the best one I have ever had. Certainly won't leave it as long to visit again.
Enjoyed it except that it was a bit too noisy for me. But I do know that it was a Saturday evening and before Xmas.
Lovely food but found 2 hairs, 1 in the meatballs and 1 on the teriyaki belly pork. The Manager apologised and discounted most of the food bill. Lovely setting and friendly staff. Been before and never had any complaints.
What a lovely place, food was delicious and not overly priced, the service was excellent and the staff were friendly. Can not wait to return.
Excellent seafood platter. Friendly service, not speedy, but don't expect it to be when food is cooked to order. One of those places that are difficult to heat, so take your cardi
A Plymouth institution for many years. Rightly so; food, setting and service are all superb. Sorry for being late. Hope to see you again soon.
This was a very good dining experience, excellent food at good pricess and very friendly service in a pleasant setting. We will certainly be eating there again.
Lovely escape from a freezing day. Good value and tasty tapas to share between me and the missus with attentive staff and a pleasant atmosphere. We'll pick out the calamari and the wasabi beef as favourites! :)
Very welcoming on arrival, great cosy atmosphere, plenty of choices on the menu and excellent quality of food and service will book again soon to try further
We went for the pre theatre option which was excellent . Good menu, well cooked food at a reasonable price Friendly efficient service Would recommend
The food was exceptional and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant was very busy and we did have to wait a littl while for the food but it was worth the wait when it arrived.
The food was really lovely and good value for money. The ambience was a little cramped, the music a bit too poppy and the chairs not very comfortable, so a mark down for that.
This is a super place to meet up with friends for lunch which is what I was doing yesterday.the staff are extremely welcoming and friendly. I have never had a bad meal here. I an thoroughly recommend it but make you book because they get busy very quickly
A quiet evening. As usual the service was friendly and food arrived within a reasonable timeframe. The vegetarian starter options were very good. I found my seafood platter rather dominated by squid, which was, as squid can be, rather rubbery but the other fish were just fine. The Chancel is a nice place, always worth an evening out going there.
The choice - and quality - of food was excellent, staff very accommodating, friendly and helpful and the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable. My wife was particularly taken with the gin menu and the story behind the one she chose which was provided by the proprieter - an excellent night out
Great experience! This was a birthday lunch for my 92 year old aunt and the staff were fantastic. The restaurant provided a birthday banner, a birthday card and a Roman candle on the dessert. Large choice of lovely food. Thoroughly satisfied.
I cannot fault the service or quality of the food and all at a reasonable price. I had a chicken ciabatta and it was really tasty and there was plenty, if not slightly too much but you don't have to eat it all!! The salad that came with the ciabatta was dressed in balsamic vinegar which makes a really nice change to oil as I don't like salad dressed in oil and always leave it. Would I go back again, most definitely.
We often book The Chancel as the service, food and environment is always excellent. You are never rushed and it’s a cozy comfortable atmosphere where you can chat and relax.
The Chancel serves Excellent food, has friendly staff, and is in a great location! Will definitely return soon, and looking forward to trying out the monthly quiz night too!
Excellent little place. Food was great. The owners were very accompanying and it was a nice touch to give two of or party birthday cards as we were there for birthday meals.
Delicious food and great value for a pre-theatre menu in a lovely little restaurant that makes the most of it's space and has very nice features. Staff were very friendly helpful, will definitely come again!
Absolutely stunning, the service, food and atmosphere are all spot on, we loved it and will be going back. The staff are lovely and friendly, a really great evening.
Fantastic evening celebrating my husband's birthday! Food and service were amazing. Thank you so much. We'll definitely visit again when we are back in Plymouth.
As always really great lunch. Food was delicious and the staff friendly and never hassle you to hurry food or leave table. I would recommend the Chancel to anyone who wants a really relaxed friendly atmosphere and of course great food
Very busy and waited quite some time for food. Food superb and we were not asked to vacate at requested time. Staff lovely food great.
We had a great meal, food was nice and reasonbly priced and the staff were very friendly. We will look forward to returning in the future.
Relaxing atmosphere food was great along with the service lovely little Bistro. One of the places you'd walk by on your way to other more traditional restaurants. But have too say we will return
Absolutely stunning meal, I had the fillet steak and my girlfriend had the belly pork, best meal out in a long time. Atmosphere was lovely and the wine was even better and very easy to drink with no hangover the next day. I would highly recommend this place to anyone
A forty minute wait for our food on a quiet lunchtime. We weren't told there were peanuts in one of the main dishes, items we ordered were forgotten, and in general the service was pretty poor.
Very laid back cosy little restaurant. Very good food with a great wine list...highly recommended. The Bruchetta is gorgeous, the lamb sublime. Slightly marred by having 'skinny fries' instead of proper chips but otherwise excellent. Really good place to go for lunch as well for tapas.
Gorgeous food and great atmosphere! Enjoyed the fish stew and fish pie. Managed to squeeze in three courses as the food is so lovely! Great night.
Very good service by very nice staff. Meal was excellent and will go there again soon. First time of going and wished we had gone before.
Staff were attentful, food was lovely, I had fishcakes, steak (cooked perfectly), and dessert. All reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend. They are slowly expanding and redecorating
