We had a lovely evening at the Garden House. We were with two guests from the Netherlands, and they were very impressed with the food and the ambience. The service was very good, and the staff moved us to a more spacious table when we requested it. Lovely food, and I would thoroughly recommend it.

Very nice on the whole. The Inn itself has a lot of character, although we were seated in the (newly built?) conservatory, but it was bright and cheerful on a Sunday afternoon. Food was very nice. Really it was traditional Sunday Lunch fair, but of a slightly more chef-y sort. A Few shortcuts were taken (veggies served under the John Dory were the same as serve as a side veg, and the sauce was quite similar to the sauce my wife had on the gnocchi). But the food was very tasty. The side veg and potato were very nicely done, which makes for a nice change. The lemon posset was lovely. Service was very nice, although maybe inexperienced and got a bit frazzled when things got busy. On the whole lovely, and would recommend and go again.

Excellent - friendly & efficient staff; interesting menu offering both traditional pub fare (fish and chips) and more unusual dishes (roast monkfish with nudjo). Everything we had was delicious and we'll definitely be returning

The bar area is the place to be rather than the conservatory as it has more character. Wide selection of food on the menu, lobster sandwich starter was excellent as was the tomato soup. Wine reasonably priced and 3 real ales available. The main course (hake) was very tasty but we had virtually finished the wine by the time it arrived. Whether not all the chefs were in with it being a Monday I don't know but other people around were waiting as well. So, on the whole very good, just the long wait a bit of a downside.

Excellent Sunday roast. Good portions as well as quality. Roast rump of beef was cooked perfectly. Wine list was very reasonable too. Great place to eat.

We chose to eat here as we were visiting Durham and had recently read a review a positive review of the restaurant by Jay Rayner. We arrived at 7.30 and finally got our main course at 9 pm. Food quality was o.k but the service delays were appalling, to say nothing of being served a different bottle of wine to the one we had asked for and on querying this being told the wine list had changed and so they had given us a different one, without bothering to check with us. They offered to change it to one of our choice but neither of the wines were very good. On paying the bill we were told they were a chef down, hence the delays.. It would have been better customer service to have explained that at the outset rather than keeping us drumming our fingers on the table. The staff were extremely pleasant and cannot be faulted in how they related to customers, A memorable evening but for the wrong reasons.

Good atmosphere and excellent food. Friendly service too. I'll be going back to this excellent gastropub in a city that does not have many choices at reasonable prices.

Excellent food, well cooked with an interesting and unusual menu. It is a shame the service was so very slow. When looking around, many tables were full of people waiting to order or waiting a long time between courses. Go, but be prepared to wait!

Wonderful food in a very cosy pub atmosphere. The haggis scotch eggs we had as a starter were fantastic and the monkfish main course also great - will definitely return!

The food was very enjoyable and they even made me a gluten free dumpling most restaurants just don't give you anything in its place .

Booked for Sunday lunch. Choice of 5 starters and 6 mains and 5 deserts. Food was good and plenty of it. Service could have been slightly better but wouldn't deter us from coming here again.

We booked the table for 6pm. The restaurant was pretty quiet but was really starting to fill up as we were leaving. Atmosphere was lovely, quirky decor. The food was sooo good!! I had risotto and my partner had chicken pasty. Will definitely go back!
