A warm welcome, happy and efficient service. A most characterful old Inn tastefully furnished and decorated. Delicious food - the fish of the day was excellent.

Enjoyed very much. The food was good and plentiful. Service was friendly and helpful. I liked the extra gravy in the gravy boat for anyone to have as an extra (I am a gravy fan)

Good food, as ever but on this occasion the service was a little slow. Our enjoyment was not diminished and we will keep going, it is a good inn.

Staff friendly and efficient, food excellent with good menu choices. Wine prices not ridiculously high. Layout of the pub/restaurant very attractive with small areas which give a more intimate feel.

The food and service was very good. Please note: The walk no 2 on their website was closer to 5 miles & the directions should have been clearer as we got lost a few times

Much more than just a country pub. Excellent food and good beer. I don't know if it's still associated with Bliekers Smokehouse, but the food was still great.

A lovely meal and pleasant friendly staff. We hadn't visited the pub for many years but were pleased to see it had still retained it's character.

Very good food and service and ambience. Only 'problem' was the quantity of the starter (at least for my wife). The pork and steak were cooked to perfection. Would certainly recommend it.

This is just a brilliant place to have Sunday lunch. Superb quality food with great service in a lovely setting. I highly recommend French Onion soup, rib of beef then sticky toffee pudding.

This old country pub is a little gem. The menu is varied with some pub classics and a range of specials that includes fresh fish dishes. Highly recommended.

Would have given top marks but no steak pie! I had goegeous chicken pie and my friend had liver, the liver was exceptional. Chunky chips are best ive ever had, gravy lovely & tasty. My other friend had fish gougons and they were not good (a bit soggy) would have been better in a crispy batter. Sticky toffee pudding was lush too

Lovely food however my preferred choice wasn’t available. The chefs special sea bass I ordered, although delicious was disappointing - slightly dry - but not enough to put me off from visiting again. Staff were great and really friendly and accommodating.

Lovely old place, though quiet/not much atmosphere when we went. Pleasant staff & good value tasty food; my only criticism is that the salad was put on a boiling hot plate!

We really enjoyed our lunch at the Malt Shovel. It’s a beautiful old pub with a very welcoming atmosphere. The food was terrific and the service excellent. There’s a wide variety of choices available and the standard was high. I’m not often in the Knaresborough area but I would go again if I was.

Nice atmosphere staff were nice but very average food very slow service. Main courses took one hour to arrive. Excuse was that it was a Saturday night and very one had come at once. We arrived at the same time as another table so that made a 4 and 6. No excuse. Pub was nearly empty at nine o'clock. We know why. Won't go back.

A good Sunday menu with some out of the ordinary options which were well presented, full of flavour and competitively priced. The Malt Shovel may be off the beaten track but it is well worth the drive to get there.

Good, interesting cooking accompanied by cheerful service in the North Yorkshire countryside. Well worth the effort of finding Brearton. Décor - shabby chic or perhaps just tired?

Have not been for many months. We were delighted to see how busy The Malt Shovel was, Friday lunch time. Our meal was excellent. Very relaxed service and not chased up with endless drink requests and such like, prefer to have unhurried service too. We shall be back, now to checkout the Polish evening! Thanks MS
