Great restaurant. Lovely menu. Looked after the 7 kids we took. Great service and looking forward to returning again, but with maybe not so many kids next time!

Very friendly staff, delicious tempura monkfish starter from the specials board followed by slow roast belly pork with crackling. Nice selection of wines by the glass, essential when only one of you wants a glass! Good atmosphere, we will definitely be going again

Tasty food, good service. A lovely way to spend a wet, gloomy Tuesday linchtime. We all four enjoyed our lunches especially as most dishes can be gluten free if required.

Best meal ever!! The chef here is amazing. Other meals have come close but this is definitely the best. I am not someone who eats a lot - but I polished the whole lot off!! The staff and restaurant/bar itself is lovely. A special find.

Attentive staff, delicious food and a clean traditional pub atmosphere. The hand pull ale was of top quality and the steak I had was absolutely beautiful. My partner also really enjoyed her steak and ale pie. Queenie scallops off the specials board were melt in the mouth. Prices were very reasonable also. Full marks to the friendly staff and the chef. Will definitely be returning. :-)

Enjoyed our (there were 4 of us) visit and the food was very good and well presented. Only complaint was the slightly slow service between our starters and main course. Otherwise we were very happy with the restaurant.

Malt Shovel is a great village pub with cosy fires and welcoming staff. It is in an attractive rural location. We really enjoyed a quality Sunday lunch there to celebrate a family birthday.

Smiling welcome, excellent service from Sylwia. Log fire burning on what was a chilly day. Loved my whitebait then game pie. My wife enjoyed pea and mint soup then Cumberland sausage. All can be recommended.

Quite expensive for the standard of food, and the wines very expensive. Desserts were a disappointment especially the Black Forest gateaux. Good ambience and service very good.

lovely pub - just very disappointing lunch time food, fish and chips, fish very non descript and chips (chunky) tasted a couple of days old - or could be old oil they were cooked in - decided to try a pudding - ice cream - usual flavours - doubt not homemade? Crème Brulee - again a disappointment - shame as we only live a few miles away and would have used this for clients as well as family dining.

Lovely old pub in a quiet village between Ripley and Knaresborough. Excellent food, three splendid real ales on tap and service was spot on. Will visit again soon.

Booking was acknowledged promptly and table was ready for us. One guest had mobility problems and would like to have seen the specials board but we were seated in the far area. The member of staff very kindly wrote down the specials menu for her. Our meals were beautifully presented and quite delicious. One guest could not eat the side salad she ordered and requested that it be taken home. This was wrapped and presented with no problem.

This is the second time we've been to the Malt Shovel and both times we have received excellent service and food and the price is not too expensive.

Normally we eat out Friday evenings but this was different as Sunday Lunch. Fabulous meal, my steak I could have cut with my little finger. Superb. Would have given a 6 if there had been chicken or turkey on the menu as my daughter (19) would have had a choice other than fish. The best place to eat I know of in the area.

On the drinks front, the Tawny port was of poor quality and we found out later we were overcharged on our drinks bill. Disappointing really as the food was excellent and the choices were extensive and we liked the service too.

Lovely country pub in a very pretty village. The service was excellent and so was the food but we felt that the portions were just too large which was a pity.

I had the halibut and it was one of the most beautifully cooked pieces of fish I have had out in a long time. Another guest had the ribeye steak and it was cooked just how he ordered it. Atmosphere is relaxed and staff are very very good.

The wait staff couldn't have been more helpful. The food was great, but the service made for a memorable evening. This establishment can be recommended without any reservations. No problem about turning down the volume of music coming through a nearby speaker.

Very traditional Sunday lunch with very large portions - we couldn't eat it all. The meat was nicely cooked, the Yorkshire puddings were good and the cauliflower cheese was a nice touch you don't always get. Overall, it was fairly standard fare - the sort of thing you'd get at home.
