Booked to take my partner for a birthday meal. Lovely ambience, low music, welcoming fire and friendly staff. Ordered moules marinieres and salt and chilli squid to start and we were not disappointed, followed by the cod from the specials board, topped off with 2 fabulous deserts. Would definitely recommend.

Really lovely ambience and the waiter service was excellent. Duck a little dry but still enjoyable. The desserts were delicious but a large cafetière was insuffient for four people

Lunchtime at the Malt Shovel after a sunny walk at Fountains Abbey. Great pub and delicious food made it a perfect day. The bread and butter pudding is to die for. Can't wait to go again.

A great little village pub in a rural location but not too far from Harrogate. Varied imaginative menu and excellent service. We loved it and will be back.

Startet of squid with Asian vegetables... Wasn't aware that carrot, onion and salad leaves were Asian . Cajun haddock.... Broken up pieces of haddock .... Not good presentation same salad as with squid .cappucino luke warm and drenched on top with cocoa.... Batter on tempura was gooey and undercooked ... Ribs were excellent...atmosphere in bar was good but back room was soulless and decor was depressing ... Disappointed shan't be going again

We went for lunch on a Sunday. It was nice that they had more than the usual carvery options for a Sunday. We both ordered one of the special which was a cajun spiced white fish with chips and salad. Excellent! Our perfect meal:) Bummer it was only a special as would like to come back and have it again!!!

Beautiful pub and delicious food. We didn't get one of our side orders but, to be fair, the portion sizes meant that we wouldn't have had room anyway. Staff were very polite and helpful. Would definitely return again.

Eight of us had lunch on a Saturday, having followed one of their walks on the website. We booked for 12.30 but a combination of a late start and a few walk detours meant we didn't arrive until 1.15. This wasn't a problem and the staff were very accommodating. The food was very good and freshly prepared, however the service was a little slow (we were warned as we arrived at the same time as another party of 7)......but we weren't in a rush. We will back again (and on time) and would recommend.

We received a very friendly welcome when we arrived at the Malt Shovel. The pub is very cosy and not overcrowded with too many tables so very comfortable. The food was lovely and would thoroughly recommend and visit again if we were in the area.

Very disappointed about the quantity and quality of the beef. That was my main reason for a Sunday roast!!!! Far too may vegetables to bulk up the plate. I would have complained if it wasn't for the company I was with on what was supposed to be a special day for us.

Excellent food, good service, nice atmosphere, well-decorated, cozy. Will come back here, when in the area. We had 3 meat-eaters and one vegetarian, and they got us all covered. Tasty food, and it looked nice too.

Enjoyed meal. Good food and good service. Only one criticism. Made the booking on the day we had lunch but on arrival the Malt Shovel had not received any notification that we would be there. Could have been a problem later in the lunchtime period as by the time we left they were busy and did not have any tables available.

Good food - there were lots of things on the menu I could have chosen. It was a very comfortable environment to eat in. Good value for money. I'm sure we will go there again. It was worth booking - not sure we would have got a table if we had turned up on spec.

Excellent service and delicious food as usual. I had the smoked salmon starter followed by the Venison, both were beautifully presented and tasted superb. The service was attentive and knowledgable without being too fussy. All in all an excellent night in a cosy and friendly atmosphere. I think the food is good value considering the high standards and will be back again to try more dishes off the menu.
