Snowing outside, and very busy on a Sunday before Christmas. Roast beef very good with the biggest Yorkshire pudding I have ever experienced. Friendly service and good value.

Good service, good main course, sticky toffee pudding cold in middle. Someone should learn how to use a microwave - puddings are not recoket science!

Everything was great. We were seated on time and our meals were wonderful. The carrot cake was the best I've ever had and the service was terrific.

We we're going to York for the day and wanted somewhere eat. Friends reccomended Royal Oak and we weren't disappointed. Great surroundings, friendly staff and fantastic food. Will definitely be calling again.

Quite a nice environment and atmosphere but average food. Potatoes and veg were underdone, beef was a bit fatty and gravy was a bit of a letdown especially as they left a massive box labelled ‘gravy granules’ on the bar... Yorkshire pudding was nice though. All in all, probably wouldn’t go back, but was alright for £11.

Although the building and staff were nice, the meal was a real disappointment - undercooked meat and chips and a prawn sauce that appeared to be tinned tomato soup with added chilli - awful! Although we complained there was no offer to replace the meal or a discount so definitely won't be visiting again and would not advise anyone else to try it!

Very friendly staff. Very quick service. Roast dinner was good, but the zesty lemon cheesecake afterwards was awesome. One of the best I've ever had.

Sunday lunch was small and although the Yorkshire pudding was reasonably impressive, the rest of the plate was average at best (thinly sliced pork, minimal veg and few potatoes) Dessert was disappointing, clearly just stuck in a microwave and custard had a thick skin. Nice venue and location but probably wouldn't go back to eat

We sat waiting to be served after been seated waited for 15mins so I decided to go to the bar myself for a pint as I had walked 2miles ready for a drink ,was told by the bar man that there was no point in standing at the bar as he was to busy and had no time to serve me a drink so he suggested I sit back at my table and wait ,which I did ,could have asked me what drink I wanted and brought it over when he had the time several others were moening about the slow service, when my food came they forgot the pepper corn sauce by time they got me some i was half way through my meal, sorry but I will not be eating there again,

Unfortunately, the food was only average to good, and some of us enjoyed what we had more than others. My wife and I had the pork belly, which was a little salty for my taste, and the dish as a whole was generally lacking in flavour, although the kids enjoyed their burgers. I would say that the mains were better than the desserts - the cheesecake tasted very much like it was a packet mix rather than home made. However, we were made to feel very welcome in a warm and cosy little alcove in the lounge of this very characterful and ambient Elizabethan pub. I would give it five for ambiance but only let down by the quality of the food.

Very helpful & friendly staff...lovely desserts! The Sunday Roast Beef with sauce and the Yorkshire Pudding could do with a bit more taste - dont be afraid of salt & pepper! Altogether a very good experience...close to topscore!

Royal Oak York was an Olde World Establishment. The Staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was very good especially the vegetables. The Beef was tasty too but I felt I could have had an extra slice not quite enough. I had the sticky toffee pudding and custard just right for me. Perhaps worth a 5 to be honest.

Staff and service great, nice atmosphere. We had a starter but suspect they cooked the mainsstraight away eating meaning they.e're reheated. My wife' salmon was dry, the crackling on my belly pork was not crispy.

Great food, really attentive and friendly staff. We had the fishcakes for our starters which were really tasty. Followed by the Sunday roast with enormous Yorkshire puddings which were cooked to perfection. The accompanying wine which we ordered was far better than the usual pub wine.

Sunday lunch was very disappointing, basically one very large Yorkshire pudding with nothing much else tiny amount of meat and veg! I did complain and it was put right but my husband still had a small plate! Nice old pub on the upside.

We went for Sunday lunch and our party consisted of three adults and two children. The menus for both adults and children were varied and portions were of a good size. The roast beef and Yorkshire pudding choice was delicious. The beef was very tasty and the vegetables were freshly cooked. Staff were very welcoming and friendly, the price was fine so overall worth visiting.

Lovely little historic pub. Nice cosy atmosphere. Good selection of guest beers. Huge Yorkshire pud (couldn't finish mine). Starter was a bit small but ok.
