The Royal Oak is a character pub and run by a lovely couple who make you feel very welcome. We arrived earlier than our reservation but where shown to a table no problems, two menus available a set one or one with more dishes which we opted for. Our meal was served in good time and was hot and very well presented so much more than a pub meal the prices were very reasonable and the service was great. After wards there was a pub quiz going on which we were invited to attend it was great fun and we had a great time.

Wonderful staff. I booked this venue for a family reunion. 11 family members travelling from all over the country from as far away as Aberdeen. We arrived to find several of our family members sat at a table having a good chat. We were shown to a lovely function room. Large table in the middle set out for our party. Ii was ideal and a surprise. We were given the menus, but we were so busy chatting and catching up none of had decided what we wanted. Absolutely no problem. Take as long as you want. He returned, and we gave him our orders which he took down in a methodical way so that when he returned with the meals he knew exactly who was having what. The meals were not 'gourmet' but all the plates were empty and everyone had enjoyed what they had. Because we were in the lovely function room we were able to share memories. laugh, and be very relaxed without disturbing anyone else. The gentleman came back and asked if we wanted sweets and/or coffee, and if we did would we mind decamping to the 'snug' as the function room was booked for another party. As we had taken such a long time we didn't mind at all. The 'snug' was another very pleasant small room which we had to ourselves. We enjoyed coffee and puddings. Only downside some coffees were brought before the sweets so the coffee was 'warm', but they did explain they only had a small coffee machine and it took a while to do. All in all for our leisurely gathering this was an ideal venue and the staff could not have been more helpful.

Not the best Sunday lunch. Everything appeared pre packed or frozen. The room was small and you were squashed in with other diners. Staff were friendly and attentive though.

Fish and chips was lovely, but other two meals ordered were cold in middle. One meal was sent back (chicken), and even on return was not hot all way through. Disappointing, as used to rate this place highly. Bar and waiting staff were very helpful and attentive however.

A very pleasant cosy room with friendly staff and good food. The menu was varied with lots to choose from and we particularly liked the deal on the Prosecco (I am duty bound to say that other sparkling wines are available!)

We went to the royal oak today, it is centrally located which is great, the atmosphere was really nice busy but comfortable. The food was fresh, and presented well we had Sunday roast. There was a 3 course menu for about £18.00. Or 2 courses for about £15. Decent value. The drinks were good and desert was a large portion. I would go again oh service vgood too. The only down side I suppose was the decor if I'm being picky.

We loved this place. One of the most memorable meals of our 3 week UK trip. Received the warmest customer service that I think I've ever had. Our food was delicious. If we'd had more time in York we would have eaten there again.

Booked for Sunday lunch. Starters were gorgeous but mains ok, beef was supposed to be pink but it was more well done and quite chewy. Yorkshire puddings were huge but a disappointment as not crispy they were soft. Sticky toffee pudding a little hard due to being over microwaved and service slightly slow but it was busy with only 1-2 girls working in lounge area Overall a good experience and I would probably return to try again even if just for the gin :-)

We were really looking forward to a roast Sunday lunch and chose to the Royal Oak in York City Centre. We had pre-booked and arrived on time. Friendly staff showed us to our reserved table and efficiently took our order for food and drinks. The starters arrived and were very good. Then disaster struck. We were told there would be a 20 minute delay before our roast pork mains arrived. Yorkshire Puddings were mentioned. After approaching 30 minutes we were then informed there would be a further 10 minute delay. We were offered a reduction (non quantified) if we would accept our meal without Yorkshire Puddings. When you’ve paid over £5 to park, and are in York, 10 minutes seemed reasonable to wait. However after 20 minutes we had had enough – well actually we’d just had drinks and starters – and left, advising the staff and said we wouldn’t be paying for anything we’d had. They were apologetic and didn’t asked for any payment. If we had requested something exotic there might have been an excuse but this is a pub which uses its traditional Englishness (14th Century building etc). Surely they serve roast lunches every week and those will always include Yorkshire Puddings. I can’t imagine there were more customers than usual so how could they get their planning of meals so wrong? So after 1 hour 20 mins we were outside, hungrier than ever. Fortunately, on the corner of the street was York Roast Company. Ok so it was more McDonalds style in a cardboard box but we got an excellent pork roast and vegetables served promptly – and it was served in a Yorkshire Pudding!

Set in a perfect location when exploring the City Centre of York, the Royal Oak is beautifully traditional but perfectly kept. We were looking for a traditional Sunday lunch and that is exactly what we got, including the best children's portion of a Sunday lunch and pudding. Highly recommend it for a family lunch. The landlord was very welcoming and gave us a useful historic update on York Minster.

The staff are friendly, the food was cooked to perfection, I liked the idea that no-one disturbed us whilst we were eating, and it felt relaxed. There was a wide range of food available, and local specialities. I would highly recommend this place and I look forward to going again.

We enjoyed our late Sunday lunch. The only disappointment was that there were only two portions of roast meat left. They must have had a busy day.
