Since throwing open its doors in 2012, Viva Dalston on Stoke Newington Road (just up the road from Dalston Junction) has gone from strength to strength. It made a name for itself as a reliably good cocktail joint, serving industrial strength margaritas and Mad Men-style whiskey sours with small plates of Mexico’s finest cuisine in London. There is little about Mexican food that is subtle, but insofar as Viva seeks to serve big flavours at affordable prices, it is succeeding enormously.
This being London’s Stoke Newington, there is a predictable uniformity in the area’s restaurants and Viva Dalston knows its lines perfectly. Expect bare brick walls and kitschy furnishings at this Stoke Newington Road eatery, together with East End-standard bar staff with tattoo sleeves. This adds to some of the place’s charm – after all this is home to Mexican food, but they don’t want you to forget that this is Mexico in Shacklewell. Guests are encouraged to pick from a menu which demonstrates the kitchen’s fondness for simplicity – there’s nachos and tacos aplenty here, just don’t expect anything too fancy.
