Very good food, but the service was lacking for such a quality reputation. We were asked if we wanted desert after completing our starter, drinks were very slow in coming, and when we eventually got to desert, we waited an age, considering the restaurant had reduced numbers by this point, it seemed that motivation disappeared with customers. A good night, but not in our top 10 of places to rush back to, sorr.
Friendly and helpful staff, great food, reasonable prices ... busy and full of atmosphere for a Tuesday evening .. Keep everything just the way it is!
As always, an outstanding meal. The food is first rate, and the service impeccable. Certainly not a place to go every week (unless your wallet can take it) but the best place in Hull for a special meal.
An amazing meal. A beautiful place with fantastic service. Couldnt fault it, definately be going back. Definately book as tables fill up quickly... very highly recommended.
The building was beautiful and the service was great. We had the market menu which I thought was a good price given the care and thought given to the food and the quality of the ingredients. I think water on the table is better than having your water glass topped up, that extra attention feels unnecessary overkill. The amuse bouche of salmon were fabulous and the food in general had some nice and clever and very tasty things in it. The night we went the cheese/mint/pea starter was good and the pig cheek too. The main course, deconstructed tart, was clever and tasted good, but the meat dish that night was not so good and needed a different knife given the cut of meat. The pudding, treacle tart, was lovely, but enormous given the size of other portions. If I'm being really picky I'd say the balance of dishes was sometimes a little bit sweet and some of the subtler flavours got lost in that. We really enjoyed our meal and the experience of eating in a lovely location. It may just be my individual likes, but I like a bit less show in the fanciness of the presentation and deliberate luxury, and a bit more confidence in the food being well cooked and good ingredients. All around us there were people enjoying special occasions and fancy wines, so the sense of luxury may be an important part of the way the restaurant presents itself, but I went for the food and enjoyed it.
Absolutely delicious every course and outstanding service. The starter was particularly brilliant - pig's cheek, main course was roast lamb - perfectly cooked, fantastic beef dripping roasties and an excellent Yorkshire pudding. Lemon sorbet dessert also fantastic.
Beautifully designed, well staffed, food excellent, fantastic cheese and wines by the glass, market menu great value. NIce to have a drink outside now, very continental!
Superb service, excellent food, our waitress was helpful and friendly. She understood the menu and discussed the wine list before we ordered. This is a wonderful restaurant.
Amazing night - excellent recommendations from the staff (aged Shiraz instead of port). Great food especially the steak. Lovely piano music on entrance. Prices competitive with other places such as this e.g. Pipe and Glass, Westwood Bar and Grill
Excellent dining experience , really helpful staff, good selection of wine , great food. We took our son to 1884 for a celebratory meal following his graduation and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience from the moment we arrived.
Excellent surroundings with modern and traditional mix within a old building next to the great vibes of the marina area of the city the food was top standard and the wide range of wines were superb would definitely go again but would have to save my pennies up but it's worth a treat every now and then
Amazing food, excellent service, beautiful restaurant. Absolutely love it highly recommend for any occasion. Everything about our evening was perfect in every way the staff are lovely
very friendly and helpful staff, not pressured about time (2 of the party were late). Food very good and we ate from the set menu. Came on time and again not rushed between courses. Would certainly recommend it especially as it was the only place of this standard I could find locally that was open at lunchtime
Sunday lunch never disappoints, top quality food at a reasonable price with great service thrown in. Can't recommend highly enough, will be returning very soon.
Pleasant setting, calm atmosphere, welcoming and helpful staff. Oh, and some tasty food. And that cheese board.... I think we'll be eating there again fairly soon.
Excellent food in an excellent location with excellent friends, bring on the city of culture so many of the visitors can experience what Hull has to offer and relies it's not a bedraggled fishing town
Great food, great service, convivial atmosphere, and they were only too willing to serve us late in the evening. We had a special guest in town, and the staff were so kind and accommodating. Certainly one of Hull's best places to be.
The main entrance is hidden behind white board of wood before the opening hour (6pm). You would be led to waiting room for a drink (you need to pay). Place your order there before you are led into the dining room. The food is good and I highly recommend to try their "bone marrow" first course. They cook that bone marrow in a very delicious manner. Beef is good. All are good. No particular dress code.
Food and service exceptional from walking through the door to walking out.James and his staff couldn't have done anymore to make us feel special.Food was the best I've eaten in any quality Hull restaurant for a very long time. Will be now be dining more often .
Buzzy, friendly place with great food. Lovely location right on the harbour. Staff were attentive and we liked the way we had a drink first with menu before being taken to our table.
My favourite restaurant in Hull, by far. Food is always excellent. Service just perfect for me, not waiting for ages and more important, not rushed. This is the way dining should be.
Lovely atmosphere and great service. Excellent food from a very interesting menu. We will certainly be back and wish we hadn't waited so long for our first visit.
We were celebrating our daughter's graduation so wanted somewhere special. The food and the service were both excellent and we wouldn't hesitate to come again in the future. Thank you for providing the perfect ending to the perfect day.
Staff really nice , surroundings lovely, great atmosphere. Will return without a doubt. My only criticism would be food took a while to arrive. I am happy to wait for freshly cooked food, but it was still as little longer than I would have anticipated.
Absolutely brilliant staff and amazing food, made my graduation meal extremely special. The decor of the restaurant is absolutely stunning. Would recommend for any special occasion. Thanks to all.
Really enjoyed the food and the evening. Pity they send do the market menu at the weekend, £28 for a main could be considered steep? Ben's recommendation of the Vintage fortified Shiraz d'Arenberg was excellent.
From the minute you enter the restaurant the staff treat you as a friend and not just as another customer . The food is very good and the service is excellent .
We go there regularly. We love the food & the service is second to none The staff & management are wonderful.well be going again shortly.B rilliant
The food was fantastic and cooked to perfection. The service was attentive and perfect in terms of frequency. All in all, it was a faultless visit.
The food and service were both of a very high standard I would recommend 1884 dock street to anyone who enjoys fine dining in a pleasant and attentive environment
It is always a pleasure to dine at 1884 Dock Street. All of our party were very impressed with the food and atmosphere. See you all again soon.
The food was fantastic! I had the chef's choice menu and was absolutely delighted with every course. We couldn't decide on the puddings so ended up getting and extra one! The service was simply amazing, with very friendly staff, which just topped the evening off beautifully. Thank you.
Food was very excellent. service was not very good, we constantly had to get the attention of the waiting staff if we wanted anything. I would not expect this level of service when the restaurant isn't busy. We walked into the restaurant, a waitress came over and did not acknowledge we were there. A lady came from behind the bar to show us to our table as she had seen we had been ignored.
1884 Dock Street Kitchen is a good but not great restaurant. It stands out in Hull for decor, location, and presentation of food, but during our visit let itself down with a *very* long wait for dessert, and poor flavour / texture in the final course. Otherwise, it was great.
Food was perfect, staff friendly and attentive. The tables for two never feel very private though, they are very close together, which is a shame.
Food was good. Wine mediocre. Service got worse as the restaurant filled. We were served by a variety of staff. I much prefer having one person responsible for the dining experience, as it gives a greater feeling of commitment and personal involvement.
Disappointed, my fiancée 21st birthday, no extra effort made by the restaurant! Very very small portions, not worth the money. Westwood in Beverley is better.
The food and service were excellent, while the atmosphere was friendly and comfortable. The Father's Day lunch was good value for money as well, although the specials were a little on the high side.
Great food and service in a nice and relaxed atmosphere. We also booked our Christmas Day lunch which James dealt with immediately. The bar is also well stocked. All the staff were friendly and we come here and to 1884 tapas for our special treats.
Excellent service, delicious food and lovely surroundings. I would strongly recommend 1884 to anyone. Not cheap but high end dining and fine wine to match .
food was good except for the dessert which was very disappointing. service was average.we have eaten better restaurants with better food and a lot better service for less money..
Always try and visit 1884 when working in Hull. The food is always great quality and atomosphere is always relaxed. Staff are friendly and helpful. I regularly recommend a visit to my colleagues
Lovely food in a lovely environment. 21st birthday meal for my daughter with the family and she really enjoyed the whole experience. Only criticism some of the family commented that they would have liked the vegetables cooked a little more.
Perfect as always, excellent food, I had smoked lobster to start, lamb for main which was beautifully cooked and very tender, dessert was a pistachio sponge with mango sorbet. Fabulous night, will always be one of my favourite restaurants.
The Quality of the food was excellent. The steaks were perfectly cooked to all of our individual tastes. The other dishes were tasty and well presented. The service was rather slow, but there were certain members of staff who were very professional and attentive.
The restaurant has a great ambiance and is in a great location. The food was excellently prepared and served. The staff were knowledgeable and recommended a very nice wine to compliment the meal and took the time to provide us with additional details so we could purchase some at a later date, for home consumption. Even though we were late arriving, due to an issue with the Taxi, we wee still asked if we would like a drink at the bar before being seated. My steak was cooked just as I like it and the sweet and Irish coffee finished off the meal perfectly. All in all a fantastic experience.
Service was excellent. We arrived early and asked if we wanted to take a seat in the bar area or go straight through to the table, we prompted for a predrink before the meal. The wine menu arrived along with the a la carte and market menu. The wine menu was extensive and separated into white, red and rose wine by region. We opted for a bottle of 2013 Chateauneuf du pape which tasted incredible. As alwasy, a pre-meal amuse bouche of watercress and potato soup came along with homemade ale bread. For starter my partner ordered orange and dill cured salmon, and i had Goat's chesse. Both plates were immaculately presented and tasted divine. After polishing off the first bottle of red wine, we prompted for a second in the form of a Quinto de Castro Duoro from Portugal which was rich in flavour yet not too strong to overwhelm the food. For main course i chose the spring vegetable, which contained rosti, charred leeks, and other season vegetables, my partnetr ordered the sea trout, both of which again tasted very nice and were presented very well. A cofee and a liquer coffee finished off what was a very enjoyable meal. Would definitely return. Total price £185.00
My third visit to 1884, this time with an elderly relative visiting Hull for the first time. She was pleasantly surprised and impressed to find such a good restaurant in the city, helping to dispel the undeserved reputation the city has suffered from. Set menu lunch was good value at £16 for two courses, with bread while we waited. Service was polite as usual. Will definitely return.
It was lovely. The decor was stylish, the food was amazing and the staff were friendly. I will be going back again and would highly recommend 1884 to many people.
Very good food and a nice ambiance. Its expensive but worth the money for a treat. we ate off the main menu, good attention to gluten free needs.
