Not a lot of choice which left us unable to order a starter. Steak was good but not the best I've ever had. Lovely venue great service not really an atmosphere per se
The wine waiter that initially greeted us was charming, lovely and seemed very knowledgable about his wines. We were then left with a waitress who did not smile during the entire service. Granted, she may have been having a bad day, if so, I do apologise for what may seem like a critical review. But it really brought down the mood of the meal as everytime she spoke to us, the atmosphere just changed. Each of the people at our party commented and agreed. The amuse bouche was rather dry and flavourless, and left a sticky residue in our mouths. The bread and butter entree was plain. Usually the bread is my father's favourite part of any meal, however it was flavourless, and tasted almost stale. The starters were actually quite nice, however it was difficult to tell what was on the plate with the venison starter, as all the ingredients seemed to blend into one. However the rabbit terrine, and oysters were rather lovely! The onion sauce for the oysters was a bit too overpowering, and could have done with a lot less onion in it. But the lemon and Tabasco worked a treat! The rabbit terrine was pleasant overall as the accompaniments were delightful! However the terrine itself could have been blended a little better as it had the texture of tinned tuna. Flavour was nice though! The mains were average, nothing too special. The mango purée did not really work with the sea bass as it was almost congealed. And the 'seasonal vegetables for the table' consisting of a tiny tin of about 7 vegetables was not really satisfying. However, the saviour of the meal was the 5 Macarons as a dessert! They were delightful. Each of them were remarkably flavoursome and tasted exactly how they were supposed to!! Considering the previous Tripadvisor reviews, we expected amazing things from this restaurant, and we were left with a relatively average meal!
The service is excellent, as is the quality and presentation of the food. It was delicious. I have visited the restaurant a dozen times or so over the past few years, whenever I am in Hull on business and I have never been disappointed. I am usually dining by myself and the staff are very welcoming and friendly. The fish in particular is always incredibly fresh and perfectly cooked. Would recommend to anyone. The set menu is very good value for what you get.
Another wonderful dining experience. Tried the al a carte menu this time and we were not disappointed. Lovely food and great service. Looking forward to our next visit.
From entering to leaving the service is very friendly and relaxed.A first class resteraunt with a first class staff who go that little bit extra to make sure you have a great time.
We had a lovely meal. There was a nice atmosphere. The food was nicely presented. The portion size was not the most generous but we had an enjoyable evening.
Nice building, décor and atmosphere, excellent food highly recommended and very tasty and well presented Service very good and attentive. A lovely venue for that special occasion.
Great restaurant, lovely setting, very well priced for the quality of food. We will be going back having eventually discovered the gem on the marina. Good service too
Starter was excellent, however the main course and pudding left a lot of room for improvement. On top of this service, whilst adequate, was certainly not with a smile. So dissapointed as I expected something much better.
Food well presented, but overpriced. 1884 is trying to be a high class restaurant - which is reflected in their prices - but is let down by the service, we had several empty glasses on our table for some time and had to try and attract attention when we wanted to order drinks even though it was a very quiet end of lunch service! I have visited 1884 on several occasions but definitely feel they need to upgrade the waiting service in order to hold the 'high class' reputation , it is in total contrast to the front of house service.
The surroundings, the service and the quality of the food and drink make this a very very good restaurant any time of the day or night.
Very comfortable restaurant, superb service, food excellent. I've eaten well in restaurants all over the world and honestly can't think of anywhere which was better than 1884.
We selected from the set menu, which was fairly limited but reasonably priced. Portion size on starters was very small. Service was poor. At times we felt rushed and then food was slow to be served. Our waitress was unfriendly and we felt serving us was too much trouble. Overall the atmosphere was cold and lacking in welcome.
this restaurant is amazing, the food and service is fantastic, we have eaten here on the evening menu and also the Sunday lunch menu, have not had a bad meal yet

Excellent food, excellent venue and very good service. Mix up on the bill but quickly rectified with apologies. An ideal place for a special occasion.
Lovely place, staff and great food. Will definitely be going back. I understand the menu is changed monthly so that's great. Give it a try!
We have rarely visited a restaurant that was so attentive to my partner's dietary needs; that made her comfortable and delivered beautiful food to us both. Excellent service as always.
Beautiful food, lovely atmosphere, delicious wine. 1884 Dock Street Kitchen, once again, delivered an exceptional dining experience. We went for our anniversary and it made our day truly spectacular. The staff are helpful and knowledgeable - they can confidently recommend wine to accompany food and suggest the perfect gin and tonic from the long list of options.
Quality food experience the service was just right, the attention to detail from the moment we walked in the door. We reserved in advance and received prior reminders of our booking. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening out at the 1884 Kitchen.
Brilliant Restaurant will definitely return. I have returned here multiple times since for different occasions. 1884 is without doubt the best restaurant in the area
We took our friends and enjoyed a fabulous Sunday lunch. The food was excellent, the service was attentive, wine list extensive and all for a very reasonable price. We keep coming back for more.
Amazing service and outstanding food; never rushed us at all great value.
Polite, attentive service. Excellent food in a a great location. The restaurant layout is not overcrowded and makes you feel comfortable. I highly recommend 1884 Dock Street Kitchen!
Quite a nice experience. Pros - nice building, plenty of space between tables, some knowlegable staff, main course very nice. Cons - very expensive for what I got - quite a bland starter, cheese board average slightly forgetful staff - had to ask twice for drinks that had been ordered to be taken with chosen dishes. acoustics not very good.
The service was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious and it was easy to book a table. I would certainly return to 1884 Dock Street Kitchen
Great tasty food and attentive service which makes a big difference, the Sunday lunch menu is perfect for an alternative to cooking at home. Even when my son knocked his drink over a fresh meal was offered.
Have only been once before and that was great and this visit didn't disappoint either. Great predrinks sampling champagne and gin & tonics of varying brands .. then an excellent meal with a very nice bottle of red .. Will definitely be going again and, hopefully not leaving it so long between visits
Awesome meal! Food was perfect... wine was perfect. The service was great - the staff really know their stuff! Can't fault anything. Would definitely recommend!
Food always reliably superb. Nice service too. Highly recommended. Lovely set menu with a couple of choices for lunch and reasonable too - I'm a regular!
Fantastic food with a good range of choices on the menu. Excellent service from very attentive and friendly staff and great ambience. This is not a cheap restaurant, but a top end establishment and you get the quality you expect for the price you are paying
Fabulous. Great food cooked thoughtfully to perfection in a happy and relaxed atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble and the staff are knowledgeable and extremely helpful.
Delicious food, great service, as always. We had a lovely wedding anniversary celebration here. Can't wait for the next excuse to visit! Particularly recommend the cheese board!
Fantastic food and superb service, the set menu is very good value for money and I would highly recommend the venison. The normal menu is also very good but quite expensive for the area.
I have dined at 1884 Dock Street Kitchen before and what draws me back is the standard of attention to making this a pleasant experience. Attentive staff who engage the customer, and you aren't rushed to leave!
Amazing quality food as always, the service was impeccable. Always very well looked after to the highest standard. Would recommend to anyone who visits Hull
Good food, knowledgeable and friendly staff. Never disappointed. Good location and emphasis on local food. Cheese board excellent. Good selection of wine and whisky to choose from as well.
Waited years to go here and it certainly met my expectations. Good service and great food served in a a lovely atmosphere. Family from Nottingham said that they would go again!
Fantastic place - staff are a credit to them - whenever we go whatever we spend we are made to feel special - like royalty and THAT alone singles out this place above all others in the city. The food is amazing presented beautifully and always lots to chose from. LOVE IT
Excellent food and top notch service. Remains my favourite place in Hull to eat.
1884 is one of the best restaurant's in town. The food and the service is excellent. The Sunday Lunches are amazing. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Amazing restaurant. It made our 2nd Wedding Anniversary superb and we will definitely be going back. All staff are extremely polite and helpful and the chef's skill's will leave you wanting more due to the delicious meal's he delivers! John & Kelly
Dissapointing. Last visit was very good. This time not so. Ordered a bottle of wine, was brought a different one, sent it back. They returned it saying the one ordered was out of stock. Why not say this in the first place. Starters very good. Main course I ordered was pidgeon, they brought fish, sent it back. Waitress returned saying she had pressed the wrong button gave a glass of champagne each took away my wifes correct meal and said the right order would arrive in ten minutes. It took longer. The pidgeon that was served was rare, under done for my taste. That second breast was over done on the bottom and almost raw on the top. My wife's meal was perfect.
We went for our wedding anniversary. It didn't disappoint, the food was lovely, the service was very good also. We will definitely be going again.
Good overall experience as usual but not quite top-notch. Starters very good; main course: vegetables a little under-seasoned, potatoes a little over-cooked, sauce (with the pork) too salty and too much of it; sorbet very good, treacle tart: too large and not 'treacly' enough.
friendly welcolm in extreemly pleasant surroundings, pleasant pre meal drink in well appointed bar excellant meal with good service and enjoyable wine. altogether a very enjoyable experience.
Just lovely. Fabulous place to meet friends and enjoy the amazing menu. Always find it difficult to choose....... always seem to go for the fillet steak.
Very poor portion size on my fish dish, I think the lemon sole fillet had been cut in half, not very impressed. Had to ask for some vegetables as it came with a small portion of wilted spinach and a circle of not very appetising potatoes which resembled peelings! Also 3 of us had the set dinner menu and it said we should have had a glass of fizz with it. I only remembered after I got home. You shouldn't have to remind staff of the offers! Not impressed. For the price I think it was overrated.
Excellent food and service as usual. Expensive for the area, but very worthwhile, certainly one of the best restaurants that Hull has to offer. I highly recommend the roasted marrowbone !!
Great smart place with great food. Drinks (soft & alcoholic) range abit limited for such a fancy place. Would visit again. Cheese selection looked extensive.
Great food, great service, convivial atmosphere, and they were only too willing to serve us late in the evening. We had a special guest in town, and the staff were so kind and accommodating. Certainly one of Hull's best places to be.
