We got their signature, surf & turf (8oz rib eye steak and 1/2 kg of mussels and crevette), smoked salmon and some scottish oysters. All are nice, especially the mussel cooked with whisky, bacon and cream sauce. Love The Mussel & Steak!

Great food and great service, as always. One of my favourite restaurants in town. The quality of food served here is very high , the prices they charge for the dishes are very reasonable. You will pay much more for far less quality food in majority of restaurants in Edinburgh.

An excellent place! Great food, great service and a great time was had by all! I will certainly be recommending it to everyone I know and if I’m ever in the area again I will be popping in for more oysters, scallops and the best surf and turf I’ve ever had!

Bit of a kerfuffle getting seated as too many tables for 8.30 and lots of people still in. Once seated, staff were great and the food and wine were fantastic. Deffo go back again.

My husband and I dined here yesterday evening. We were seated upstairs as it was a busy Saturday evening. Not a problem. We ordered oysters to start, mussels and a seafood platter. There was a large party in and after a short while we heard a screech followed by someone saying something about a mouse. We thought we must have misheard and carried on with our conversation whilst awaiting our starters. Only then something caught my eye and sure enough on the floor under the table next to us is a grey mouse happily grooming itself. Obviously I got a shock so said quite loudly to my husband oh god it is a mouse!! The waiter came over and looked for it but was long gone. I shot my husband and look that said should we stay but our starter came. We were reassured that all measures were in place but it can happen. I felt like I constantly spent the rest of the time scanning the floor. The whole atmosphere changed. Our mains arrived and were adequate but slightly overpriced in our opinion. We heard another screech and sure enough a different sized mouse was having a jaunt around the restaurant! Just then my husband pointed out that there was a hole in the bottom of the fixed seating and sure enough a tiny baby mouse was coming out of it. The waiter came running over with a pen in his hand and I said to be honest it was quite cute! We pointed out the hole he declared 'oh shit' and went and got a brillo pad to block the hole up. We kind of said oh yeah its one of those things but after leaving we were quite shocked. We have our own pubs and restaurants and know that really we would be in a lot of trouble if this happened and just passed it off as casually to customers. It was just so weird it didn't feel real! Anyhow the top and bottom of it is we paid 73.00 for some lovely oysters, adequate mains, awesome chips, a bottle of wine and dinner with a family of rodents. We have agreed that this will be our second and last visit. Initially I would have rated 3 stars. I have changed the review to this as both myself and my husband are now suffering with severe food poisoning. Doctor has recommended we contact environmental health. On perusal of other reviews it is quite clear management do not respond.

Our table was ready for us on arrival and we were served quickly and efficiently. As always, the food was excellent and a great amount of care had gone into the cooking and presentation of the dishes we chose. It isn't the first Hogmanay meal we have partaken in at this restaurant and it certainly won't be the last. Thank you all at The Mussel and Steak Bar and we wish you all the best in 2018.

Excellent food. Recommend the grilled oysters. Good sized portions (not too much or too little). Chips fried in beef fat highly recommended (but one portion enough as a side for two. Good friendly service. Don't feel rushed at any time. Great start to our Hogmanay celebration

The salmon starter and the salmon main were incredibly well balanced dishes - the Chef makes the food dance on your tongue and the key ingredients sing with the well-chosen additionals. Staff are friendly and the environment is understated and unassuming- perfect for relaxed night with 5-Star food. Crab linguine was great, and Mussel sauces are to die for! Desserts very good (we had sticky toffee pudding and mulled wine poached pears) but mains are definitely the star of the show. Beautiful plating. Wonderful focused selection with the whisky flights. Would highly highly recommend.

Good food, engaging staff. Wine list a little small for a steak house, but sticking to what your customers like is not a bad thing. Didn’t understand the frozen grapes on the cheeseboard.

The initial service was good, the food was good but what spoiled it was the lack of any customer service or interaction from the staff when we left-no thanks or anything and when I said goodbye, the guy who served us didn't even bother to look up from his computer and muttered something like 'bye'. No we didn't tip given the bill was £130! If the pricing in the restaurant is dependent on leaving even more money the end then it should be absolutely explicit. I have used this place for a number of years because I know I get a good steak, their wine is good etc. but this really took the edge off it for me and will look for somewhere else when I am in Edinburgh again.

Having visited this restaurant twice before, the last 3 or 4 years ago, I have to say my group was generally disappointed with our visit. We had various starters, 3 of us opted for the queen scallops, which would best be described as miniature scallops, served on a bed of extremely salty seaweed. Of our mains, 3 of our group opted for steaks. 2 sirloins and the picanha - which was rump. The 2 sirloins were returned immediately for re-heating. The picanha which was medium was medium to rare in some parts and very rate to the point of being inedible in others. The mussels we're lovely! (oh, the sides of chips also had a distinct vanilla flavour about them....) Our initial complaint resulted in the deduction of the 10% service charge, which as we pointed out a) should have been optional anyway and b) didn't cover our satisfaction, resulted in a 12.5% discount from the food bill and no service charge was left - which was unfortunate for the staff as their service was great. Such a pity the food let them down Unfortunately due to the large number of good to great restaurants in Edinburgh, it's unlikely we shall return. In saying that, when we left around 5pm, the restaurant appeared full and I hope for the staff and owner's sake that this was just the chef having a bad day....
