31 Castlegate Restaurant

This was my 3rd visit to York and also my 3rd visit here to have dinner. Food was as lovely as always with great service. If you are looking for somewhere to have dinner...give this restaurant a try...you won't be disappointed.

Nice welcome followed by excellent food and efficient, friendly service. There were 7 in our party and we would certainly all go again to 31 Castlegate.

This is a quirky restaurant offering some great food and the service staff weee very friendly. They were very busy when we went for dinner and seemed surprised and. It prepared for this. Service was slow as a result and that is the only thing preventing me from rating it higher.

Lovely place. Great food and nice service one of our favourite place to eat in York. Will be back next time we return. A plus

A nice bright and airy restaurant although a little difficult to find!Peacefull haven tucked away from main hustle and bustle.Lovely food with pleasant staff,worth a visit.

I took my mum here for early Mother's Day lunch. Fantastic food and service love this place. i will be back again soon I hope.

Lovely querky restaurant due to the building. Great food and portion sizes are fine for the smaller eater. Would of liked more bread in the bread basket or a choice of bread.

My wife & I opted for the set menu from which the food was excellent & reasonably priced along with the wine. The waiting staff were warm & friendly.

The restaurant staff were polite and attentive. The food was served promptly and was of excellent quality, a real little gem... I'd recommend the sticky toffee pudding - one of the best I've tried. This was a great find, I'll be sure to visit again next time I'm in York.

It's a really good restaurant and we will definitely go there again in the future. Food and service overall were excellent. Some more detailed feedback... The menu had a nice selection of dishes. Starters and mains were really excellent. Desserts not quite as good, for example in the Dark chocolate and cherry mille feuille, the mille feuille itself was a bit hard and "cardboardy", and it could have done with a bit more cherry flavour, but still excellently presented and generally tasty. One other small point is that the toilets were OK and clean, but decor and fittings not up to the standard of the rest of the restaurant.

The food here is wonderful and cooked as you wait, which can take a little while, but it is worth it. The only reason I marked it down slightly was a lack of atmosphere, but maybe that was just due to the restaurant being emptyish. On the other hand it was great to be able to have a conversation without the noise of most restaurants. I would urge anyone to go there and enjoy the great food and pleasant service.

Food very nice but it felt like the interior of an old people's home. Needs a interior revamp. Wouldn't particularly go back because of that.

Excellent food, attentive and friendly service. The location of the restaurant is good too, away from the crazy hen parties and drunks that have taken over the York city centre.

Great restaurant with fantastic food, portion sizes were just right, good value, lovely atmosphere, fabulous decor, very attentive staff and I would highly recommend 31 Castlegate.

The menu sounded delicious but food sadly didn't meet expectations, staff were lovely & service very good but due to the poor quality of the food we're unlikely to visit again.

Lovely little restaurant. The set menu provided just enough choice and was very reasonable. The Sea bass was wonderful. Service was great and the friendly staff were attentive but not intrusive. Would definitely go back.

Very good food and great service. The lamb was cooked to perfection. We will definitely visit again later this year, when we come back to York.

We arrived at 7.30 and where welcomed with a warm smile this made us feel at home immediately. The food and service where excellent we could not recommend 31 castlegate highly enough. Try it you will not be disappointed.

Was really quiet when we went which was great for service. We had the set menu which was brilliant value for money and the food was fantastic!!

went with another couple for an early evening meal and had the 2/3 course specials. food was excellent and it was a nice setting. staff were friendly and professional. will certainly return

Lovely meal to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. Very attentive staff and nice setting. Would recommend the belly pork starter- could have eaten it as a main it was so delicious!

Not great at all put a downer on our valentines meal. Waiting staff tried their best but food was disappointing all round. Might have Just been an off night

Lovely food and fab service, great value for money. The only negative was the restaurant felt dated and lacked atmosphere. We visited on 23rd December and it did not feel that festive.

Staff lovely. Food tasty but just OK. Advertised as 'fine dining' thats why we booked. Nowhere near 'fine dining'. Competant mid priced restaurant tasty food.

My first trip to York in many years and was looking for a resraurant that served Engish food...this is a lovely restaurant, the food was cooked to perfection and was well presented. The staff were very attentive. I would recommend stopping at this restaurant for a break from the hustle and bustle!

Delicious meal at a very reasonable price. Plenty of choice and everything was served to a very high quality. Would definitely recommend a visit here if you are in York.

Super food and service .it was very quiet so lacked any atmosphere. But will certainly revisit Good pricing .and excellent wine . Remember to go upstairs if having a main meal

We visited 31 Castle Gate in January for my Husbands Birthday and had a lovely romantic meal for two. The food was fantastic, 5* and the staff were friendly and welcoming.

I found this restaurant very good value with very pleasant staff. I would certainly recommend this venue for a good meal and pleasant experience. We will return again.

Really enjoyable meal, varied menu. Nice atmosphere and very accommodating staff. We had a very relaxed time, overstaying close of lunch without realising. Very satisfied.

Better than average two course lunch. Good plain simple food. Starter and main course full of well0cooked, tasty, fresh ingredients, plus a bottle of good locally brewed ale. The restaurant labels itself as 'Fine Dining', however, based on this one experience, I would put it more in the 'Gastro Pub' category.

Just what I wanted! A Xmas dinner meal not cooked by me! Was tasty and staff just lovely .wd recommend no problem and we are fussy!
