Totally fantastic, best meal I have ever had. Excellent from the second we walked in to when we left. Great service and fabulous food cannot fault this place.

Really good. Everything, pretty much was excellent. Food great, setting good and staff really efficient. At times it was a little slow but that suited us as often it is too quick. I think that perhaps there was a shortage of staff waiting tables but that is hardly the fault of those that were. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed.

This was our first visit, it having been recommended by the staff at Nineteen which unfortunately has had to close due to the end of lease. It definitely came up to expectations and without a doubt we will be back. The staff are friendly and welcoming and we had a great meal well presented at a reasonable price. It is good to see that there are still independent restaurants in York that can stand up to the tidal wave of national chains which is at present engulfing the city centre. Regarding the detailed gradings below. This was a lunchtime visit when the restaurant was not busy and provided a quiet haven to relax and eat. We were not looking for an "entertaining" atmosphere and where food is cooked to order I would be worried if waiting times were short. Over all the grading descriptions are obviously geared to lively night time venues and are less than applicable to somewhere for lunch

A lovely little restaurant. Food was amazing, particularly the pork starter. Excellent value for money plus there is the choice of an early bird menu. Wine very reasonably priced. Great service. What more could you ask for? Would definitely recommend.

Excellent food. Superb waiting staff. Nothing was too much to ask. Our waitress, Annie was particularly helpful and very welcoming. Thank you so much for a lovely evening. We will be back.

Very good restaurant just outside the main bustle of the town centre. Pleasent and friendly staff, food ordered was done perfectly and good value for money. Will be going again when we are next in York.

Every time I stay at York I allways call hear very nice staff and meal good. Would recommend anyone that I know goin to York to call in. Had your card for years. Thanks.

booked at last minute which i was suprised to be able to find spaces available. Run out of sancerre at 7.00pm No bread to start with even though e had balsamic vinegar in a dish on the table and had to ask. Run out of rib eye steak. food below average and my fillet steak came cold and had to be re done whilst i sat and watched my girlfriend eat her main course and then she watched me eat mine when my came ten minutes later. poor service and typical of alot of restaurants in york where the owners employ young girls with no training.

Good quiet ambience with no 'music' distractions. Pleasant and efficient service . Excellent choice of wines by the glass ( variable sizes ) . Interesting menu for a summer lunch .Competitive pricing . A fine dining experience

Great food, great staff, very relaxed atmosphere. Not particularly bothered about the setting, even though it's fine, but it lends itself to focusing on your company and food. Happily go back

Well 4.5. Very friendly but completely sold out of all fish (bream and bass) except salmon which was a bore because we were having a celebration meal for someone (graduation day) who doesn't eat meat (and the veggie options weren't that exciting). And I'd phoned for that reason to check there was always a good fish selection and was assured there was. Still the salmon tasted delicious (just salmon AGAIN). And the pigeon and crispy pork for the meat eaters were fab. Would go certainly again but maybe call on the day to stress and special requirement.

this was a meal that we all thoroughly enjoyed. The food was excellent. The service was a trifle slow but we put this down to it being graduation at York University so the restaurant was packed. Very polite service, definitely on our list for our next visit to York.

Four of us went for lunch; very helpful, friendly staff who provided excellent service. We ordered a three-course meal from the lunch menu and all of us were very happy with the food, portion size (just right!) and service. 31 Castlegate features an elegant, spacious interior and was the perfect choice for a graduation celebration. The best: the amazing food comes at a very good price; a 3-course meal under £20/head. We will be going back very soon, definitely highly recommended!

Lovely staff and excellent food. Atmosphere of the restaurant was great. Deceptively big space and quirky period furniture compleats a rather lovely setting. Will go again.

For a Thursday evening it was busy so a good atmosphere. Food lovely , totally full after the starter and main so couldn't consider dessert

We ordered from the set menu. We were able to enjoy a leisurely meal with excellent food and wine.The waiters and waitresses were cheerful and efficient.

Nice surroundings, good variety of food. Pity more people weren't dining at the time of our visit to give a greater atmosphere. Well worth a visit.

Lovely intimate restaurant, an oasis of calm on Halloween night, right in the middle of York. Good food and friendly service. Will certainly go again.

I have been to this restaurant many times before and it never fails to satisfy. The service is friendly and the food is great. It's a lovely, intimate environment without being too stuffy. 10/10.

Had a lovely warm greeting on arrival. Service was attentive without being intrusive. Any issues we had during the meal were dealt with promptly. The fillet steak was to die for, very tender and cooked to perfection! All in all an excellent restaurant with superb staff, would definitely return here again and again.

We loved the selection of food, and the puddings were lovely. Only comment would be that the toilets need a bit on an update, they are a bit grotty.

My wifes soup was very good, my mushrooms were poor and the pastry rock hard. For mains I had duck which was tasty and well cooked. The potatoes were hard and undercooked. My wife's fish was overcooked and chewy. Overall a very mixed meal, somewhat disappointing.

My husband saw people going in and out of a small free standing building visible from our hotel. He realised it was a restaurant so we googled it. After reading the reviews and the menu we made a reservation for 31 Castlegate. We found a Georgian townhouse converted into a restaurant with a lovely atmosphere, delicious food and attentive staff. I highly recommend 31 Castlegate.

Superb goat cheese mousse starter with lovely fresh local heirloom tomatoes. Excellent duck, melt in your mouth sea Bass. Sweets not up to standards of first two courses. Good service. Worth a Visit!

A beautiful meal which we all enjoyed. Our starters of carrot and Parsnip soup and smoked haddock chowder were delicious. We all chose steaks for mains, they were cooked to perfection and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert was the best we have ever tasted . A little hiccup with the service, forgot our water glasses and initially served us the wrong meals but the resteraunt was full and the girls were extremely busy. I would definately recommend and visit again.

Lovely meal well cooked,Not rushed but served within a reasonable time.Staff were helpful and polite.We didn't have a dessert as we were too full.Reasonably priced,will be going again soon .

Small intimate restaurant with great food, friendly and attentive staff and great value for money. The set menu is fantastic! The pork in sesame aeed starter was fab, as was the mushroom tart. The mains of duck and pork shank were fab, as were the deserts. A great time!

After looking on trip advisor for somewhere to eat whilst staying in York. I found 31 Castlegate, reviews looked really good so I thought I would make a reservation. Restaurant is cosy and perfect for a relaxing night and the food was of a very high standard! Staff were also lovely! Fully recommend.

I booked this restaurant after reading the reviews, I was going with 3 friends. The food and atmosphere was fantastic. Very enjoyable would defiantly recommend this place.

I booked for 11 ladies but one changed her mind, staff were good and service. We were staying at a hotel close by so was ideal before our homeward bound trip

Excellent,good service and good traditional food,even better wide ranging wine list offering good value. We have been here before and it gets better.Parking is a bit of a problem despite a large adjacent corporation car park ,overflowing in the tourist periods
