Terrific food served in a very friendly and courteous way. Wonderful restaurant with a very relaxing ambience. On the basis of this visit I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anybody looking for a fine dining experience in York.

Nice cosy dining room,good friendly service and very enjoyable well presented food at a very reasonable price ,what more do you want from an evening meal

Staff were very helpful following a prior busy wedding event. As usual the food was very good and helped my wife complete and enjoy a very happy birthday.

Took the girlfriend out for her birthday and we was absolutely amazed at the quality and how professional the staff was I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone

Lovely food and lovely staff. A fabulous evening. We were made to feel very welcome and had an excellent birthday meal ! The Christmas pudding was wonderful.

Good food but lack of ambience. The crispy pork I had was very tasty and so was the chicken & creamy leeks. My husband had fillet steak which was good. I appreciate it's a historic Georgian house but did feel like we were sat in someone's front room with the decor & not much atmosphere. There's no 'front of house' or Maître d altho the 2 girls who were serving were very pleasant. A reasonable priced menu with tasty food

My husband and I had wonderful evening at 31 Castlegate celebrating our wedding anniversary. We received a warm welcome and all the staff were consistently friendly and professional. The food was divine. We both had 3 courses each, and all were beautiful both in taste and presentation. The restaurant serves locally sourced produce that is in season at that time, so you know it's going to be fresh. Most importantly, we were not rushed and could enjoy our anniversary meal in comfort with adequate pauses between courses. We will definitely return the next time we find ourselves in York. Great job guys, well done.

Great food and service at a reasonable price. Definitely worth a visit just to see the interior of this very old quaint building. Will definitely eat there again.

Really friendly staff who gave excellent service. The meal was very good and exceptionally good value. I would definitely go again and recommend to a friend- which is how I heard about the venue.

Warm welcome and well appointed. Decent menu and food was of a good standard.

Food was very nice,decent size and quite reasonably priced.Red wine, chicken and mushroom terrine and the trio of venison could have been a bit warmer - just to bring the flavours out.My medium to rare fillet steak was on medium side,but tasted very nice.Not sure about the place itself - a bit dated.

Starter of 'crispy' pork which was just hard and completely swamped in a very sweet sauce was a disappointment. Lamb main had a sauce that was lacking any real depth of flavour and was totally washed away by the courgettes - need to work on the sauce and think about a different vegetable accompaniment. It was an OK meal without being one to remember.

Lovely customer service - friendly but not intrusive. It was all beautifully cooked and I want to make a special mention of the fish which was cooked perfectly.

Delightful romantic gem right next to Castle Museum - come before 7pm for the set dinner! The setting is intimate and cozy and the service wonderful

We thought the staff were a bit over friendly, asking us if everything was ok too many times. The food was average I'm afraid, although I did like the dessert.

We had been meaning to give this restaurant a try for some time and are now pleased that we eventually got around to it. The ambience is a little odd perhaps due to the height of the room, but the service and food were both very good, and I thought, good value for money.

A lovely and friendly restaurant. Really nice food and a good selection of wines. Great value if you select off the set menu but even the a la carte menu represents value for money. Will go again when back in York.

Great food, nice atmosphere and excellent value for money. There was a good choice of a la carte options and good specials too. The venison was delicious but the star of the show was the peanut butter parfait. Ummmmmm!

Great variety on the menu , excellent service and overall as good a Sunday Lunch I've had in a long time , thoroughly recommended in my opinion .

Came for a few days away and based our choice on distance from where we stayed. (Hotel Indigo) aswell as trip advisor rating. We were not disappointed. Absolutely brilliant food. Service was very good also.

Extremely friendly yet professional staff, we had the set dinner menu which is very competitively priced, the quality of food is excellent and portions are not skimped on. Conveniently situated near a public car park this restaurant ticked all the boxes for us. We'll definitely be returning.

Lovely food, well priced set menu...we did encounter a piece of plastic in our jug of water but we'll let it slide as the rest made up for it.

Our first visit to 31 Castlegate and we weren't disappointed. We opted for the 3 courses for £17.95 which was excellent value. Ham Hock to start, followed by chicken with goats cheese and sun dried tomatoes and creme brûlée to finish. Service was great too. Would definitely recommend a visit.

We had a really nice meal. The steak was cooked to our preference and the staff were attentive and friendly. We would certainly dine there again when next visiting York.

Delicious food, good service. Nice decorations. I will certainly be back. Set menu was affordable, if a bit on the high side. Avoid the chicken breast, Everything else was good.

Outstanding food, affordable wine list, cozy atmosphere, and gracious staff. We had a wonderful meal and would definitely return and/or recommend Castlegate restaurant to others!

The place is a little dated and in need of an overhaul we found the food a little mixed my wife's main sea bream was very rich, I ordered the lemon cheese cake for afters which turned out to be the chefs take on it and not as expected which was around 50% to big, not the worst place I have been in York, this being meltons 2 which is definitely one to miss, the web site and testimonials present it better than it is, unfortunately we do have very high standards, the lack of atmosphere was also something which needs to be addressed, the service couldn't be questioned, hence why I gave a good tip, hope this helps, I always try to be honest

A fantastic dining experience. The waitresses and front of house were most welcoming, friendly and attentive. The food was wonderful and very well priced for its quality. I would definitely recommend this restaurant without hesitation.

The restaurant was amazing; we went for a Mother's Day meal with my fussy mum but there was plenty of choice on the menu, which was well priced and amazing quality. The service was also brilliant and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. I would 100% recommend visiting here and am already planning my next visit myself

Absolutely beautiful food and brilliant service. Can't fault it at all. Went for Mother's Day lunch and had the set menu, we all chose different meals and all enjoyed very much.
