Really enjoyable meal, varied menu. Nice atmosphere and very accommodating staff. We had a very relaxed time, overstaying close of lunch without realising. Very satisfied.

31 Castlegate is our favourite restaurant in York -consistently high quality meals enhanced by wonderful service. I hope w shall be visiting it again as soon as we visit York again

Our party of 14 people had a fantastic time. Each course arrived in a timely manner together and although there were 14 to serve all starters and mains were hot. The quality of the food was amazing and the attentive waitress was very efficient. We would definitely recommend to anyone seeking an excellent meal in the heart of York.

Really, really good I cannot find any faults at all from the staff to the food to the ambience. Thank you so much great experience.

Excellent food, really good quality, large portions and excellent service. Nothing was too much to ask for. We would definitely recommend 31 Castlegate. We weren't rush or made to feel that they needed our table. Extremely friendly and well mannered staff, a credit to the restaurant.

Lovely food, staff were brilliant and accommodating. The building itself was historic and homely. This is a restaurant I would definitely recommend and will hopefully be back again.

Food very nice, but some items too big, such as the potato serves with the lamb. Couldn't fault the service. Prices very reasonable. Will be back in the future.

Enjoyed the atmosphere and good service. Mushroom starter very tasty but a little disappointed with the chicken main. Previous visit was good all round however.

The food was truly excellent, and good value for money, not cheap but far better for the price than many other places! Staff were friendly, there was a nice atmosphere, and the menu had enough choice without being overly long. This was my second visit - yet again I had a really lovely evening, enjoyed my meal and I will be definitely be returning and recommending.

It was OK, not great. Food was average and a little overcooked. Service was good and we were made to feel welcome. In need of a bit of modernization

Lovely food, good service and we'll worth a visit. Is it possible to adjust the lighting so it isn't so bright? It would help to bring out the character of the building.

Really good evening excellent service with a good choice of food and wine. I was very surprised with the bill as I would have expected to pay more for the standard of food. Staff were very attentive and courteous. On the day the restaurant could not accept card payments but we paid with the Zapper app.

Service was a ittle slow, but very polite and warm. Good was fabulous. Great pre-theatre meal, lovely surroundings; really romantic setting. Do go here, great food reasonably priced and lovely staff

Nice place within the city walls with lovely food and good value too. Only downside is that it lacked a little atmosphere, otherwise I recommend this restaurant.

Reasonable food and service at a fair price. The set menu, especially, could do with more seasonal variation -- it's been the same for quite a while now.

THe restaurant is really lovely - and the staff were very attentive at all times. And the food was fantastic. Definately your money's worth! For what you get, the price is a bargain!

Unfortunately was an unpleasant experience. We arrived at 19:30 - 3 people reservation - starters were served at 20:15, it took them 45 minutes to prepare a platter of cold meat cuts. Our second starter of rabbit tasted like canned meat served in a tiny souffle pot. Main dishes arrived at 21:05 total waiting time of 1 hour and a half. The 2 main Venison dishes were overcooked and served with a watery gravy and a burned pie. The rib eye steak contained 2 small slices of fillets and was once again served with a thin and poorly tasting blue cheese sauce. Very poor customer service. We won't recommend this restaurant to anyone unless things become better in the future. Your establishment was recommended to us as a higher end restaurant and although the portions followed the European gourmet cuisine, the quality and service were unacceptable

We had a lovely meal, with a very pleasant young lady looking after us. We have been before & will go again before too long.

We have had dinner at 31Castle gate a couple of times. The menu is varied and there is always a choice to suit. The customer service on our last visit was, as always, good and even though the kitchen was short of one chef due to illness, we enjoyed the meal and the atmosphere a lot. I will definately go back for another evening out.

My hubby had scallops to start with followed by rib eye steak then the cheese board he said ithey were perfection, I had fillet steak which was also cooked to perfection, homemade chips and onion rings and a lovely mushroom sauce accompanied the steak and did not disappoint, all the staff were attentive and really friendly, especially the girl with the short hair she was lovely, we will definitely be going again when we next visit York.

Good food and friendly service. One of us (not me!) poured most of the contents of the salt shaker on their main course which they were happy to replace. I particularly glad to see they don't add the customary service charge as others do where you have to ask to have it removed. In fact no mention is made of a discretionary tip. So I happily gave 14%. We thought it was good value so are certainly happy to eat there again.

We had a lovely meal in a very charming building. The service was good and the food was delicious, especially the desert special, which we shared. Would highly recommend.

Our third visit in 2 years. Had a really lovely evening, food was superb, staff were very friendly, and the food is extremely well priced for the quality. Would recommend to anyone, you will definitely not be disappointed.

Great food and waitress. She was amusing and appropriately helpful, which made the night. Meal was also good value for the quality. My reluctance to score higher was based on the fact the tables are cramped and made it difficult for all of us to get to our seats and the lighting was poor with small, pale writing in the menu, particularly the wine menu. These made the first 10 minutes of our visit frustrating. Only the intelligent whit of our waitress saved the day.

Great food and service, both had the rib eye steak, had soup for starter all good. Waitresses couldn't have been more attentive. Well organised and ready to help

Wonderful, good food, excellent service, very reasonable price especially on the fixed price three course menu. Top notch. The bottled beer XS is the best beer out of a bottle I have ever tasted.

Great tasting food, friendly service, accommodating to requests for minor changes to the dishes served. The atmosphere was great and a good music playlist. Will return.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Just the right level if service attentive and knowledgable but not at all hovering. Delicious food well prepared and presented in good size portions; the charcouterie starter could even have been shared if you wanted to do the full 3 courses. Nice wine selection too. Overall an extremely enjoyable evening.

Superb food, we had the standard menu. My pork was brilliant and his chicken was judged delicious. We had starters and sweets, all was superb.

Our first choice restaurant when in York! Excellent food and value for money - very happy to recommend this little gem and looking forward to our next visit - in November!

Excellent food and friendly service - no-one was fazed by the one-year old child in our midst. My only objection was the time limitation. Ideally a restaurant meal should be enjoyed without having to glance at your watch every so often.

We had a great time, delicious food, great wine & very friendly staff. All set in a historic building with great atmosphere. Looking forward to visiting again when back racing in York!

Good ambiance and no problem with holding conversations . Our special request for allowing one guest to have non alcoholic wine was granted without any argument . Menu choice interesting . Starter mushroom tart was tasty but pastry too tough . Main course of confit duck was excellent . One guest has risotto which was also praised . An interesting choice of deserts all went down well . A fine NZ Sauvignon was also popular > Service was efficient and good humoured . Total bill for 4 was less than £100 i.e very good value . WE shall use again

Two courses for £15.95 on the set menu, a bargain. We had duck and sea bream, cooked beautifully and well seasoned. Portions sizes were just right. The service was very good, the waiting on staff were friendly and helpful and although the place isn't impressive from the outside,the interior of the restaurant is a pleasant surprise. Recommended

Very good restaurant just outside the main bustle of the town centre. Pleasent and friendly staff, food ordered was done perfectly and good value for money. Will be going again when we are next in York.
