Service perfect. Food even better. Lamb rump with sweet potato sumptuous. Mackerel and rhubarb starter a beautiful combination of 2 of my favourite foods. Best meal out for a long time. Go and eat.

The meal was superb! My husband had the Filet Beef Stroganoff and said it was the best he'd ever tasted! The staff were very attentive and the atmosphere was good. Would thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

Absolutely delicious food, brilliant atmosphere, wonderful service. Went here for valentines day and couldn't have had a better time, made it a very special night for me and my girlfriend.

This was my third or fourth time dining at 31 Castlegate. It is always a lovely dining experience and the set menu is filled with excellent choices. My husband had the confit duck as a main and I had the sea bass fillet. Both were quite good although the duck was seasoned better than my fish which, on this evening, was a bit bland. The same was true of my starter: the mushroom tart needed salt! Service was excellent and we will return.

It was busy, but even so, the service was a little slow - about 15-20 minutes just to get a menu, and 45 minutes for a starter. We had to ask for the complimentary bread as it wasn't given to us. That said, the food was lovely, really, really nice.

I visited with work colleagues for a farewell lunch, the menu has lots of choice to cover all tastes. The food was great and very good value. I would recommend.

Excellent food in a restaurant with real character. The Valentine's Day set menu was delicious, I had the soup starter, followed by beef medallions and finished with the sticky toffee pudding and each course was perfect.

Really enjoyed the great food, lovely selection, the platter and the lamb were amazing and we had great service from the friendly staff there at Castlegate 31.

Delicious food, tentative service and romantic ambiance led to a truly wonderful night. Price was reasonable and the fillet steak was mouthwatering (and cooked to perfection). We'll be back!

overall a very good experience,although not many people in the restaurant we did not feel isolated,the restaurant has a very good atmosphere.The serivce was efficient and welcoming, We had the set menu which was of very good value having the sea bass which could not be faulted.The wine was also very good value and a good selection. Will return if back visiting York.

The restaurant is quirky and in a nice setting, the staff were attentive and friendly. The food was absolutely delicious, excellent all round, well done 31 Castlegate.

Restaurant is great and our food first class however there was no Christmas cheer due to it being empty and we finished eating on our own. Elaine and Alan

Friendly and attentive service. Everyone enjoyed their meals. Well-priced. The haddock chowder and rib eye steaks were the most enjoyed by our party. An excellent meal.

Came for our anniversary in January 2016 service and the food was spot on no complaints at all would recommend to friends and family and we will return.

Food was amazing. Service was great. The selection of food was very comprehensive as was the wine list. Location ideal. All in all a wonderful night.

Another reviewer was absolutely correct - it looks nothing from the outside but inside everything is perfect. Tables not too near to each other, food and drink excellent and staff very helpful - I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, we were celebrating an anniversary and it was a lovely night and, for the centre of York, not overly expensive - we had the set menu!!

The food was very good. However in spite of reserving by phone and by e mail we were not expected and put in the downstairs room in full view of the kitchen and next to the toilets. A romantic evening had been planned but somewhat tarnished by the setting.

Genuine friendly folk, warm atmosphere, relaxed casual dining. Great value set menu. Reasonably priced wine list. Service a wee bit too fast. A good time had by all.

Great food as always and it came out on time. The only thing I would have changed is if the staff could have asked how our food was- as they didn't once! Apart from this small point, I really enjoyed the evening.

Loved the food and the place, service was second to none, and what a bargain price , just lacked a bit of ambience, too quiet.

As a party of 10 old friends meeting up for a reunion in York we had a lovely evening. Excellent food and perfect front of house. This is my 3rd visit to 31 Castlegate and it would certainly be my first choice when visiting this beautiful city. Thank you very much.

Great service as ever are here last year and enjoyed so back again, had rib eye which spot on. Given the choice if what veg or potato to have with meal

Excellent choice on early set menu. Lovely Asian style meat balls for starter. Confied Duck for main tasty & nice potatoes & spinach accomnment. No room for desert. Excellent bottle of Argentinean Malbec to wash it all down. V good value

Great choice of food cooked to perfection. With the set menu as well there is any amazing choice.even the cocktails are good. It a must.

Excellent foood, attentive staff, beautiful surroundings. Would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to couples and groups alike. Cannot find fault with anything. Go on, try it!
